Acerca de esta escucha
Flavius Ferox is the hard-bitten centurion charged with keeping the peace on Britannia's frontier with the barbarian tribes of the north. Now he's been summoned to Londinium by the governor, but before he sets out an imperial freedman is found brutally murdered in a latrine at Vindolanda fort. Ferox must find the killer. As he follows the trail, the murder leads him to plots against the empire and Rome itself. Bandits, soldiers and gladiators alike are trying to kill him, old friends turn traitor, and Ferox is lured reluctantly to the sinister haunts of the old druids on the isle of Mona.

Historia
Stretching 80 miles from coast to coast across northern England, Hadrian's Wall is the largest Roman artifact known today. It is commonly viewed as a defiant barrier, the end of the empire, a place where civilization stopped and barbarism began. In fact, the massive structure remains shrouded in mystery. Was the wall intended to keep out the Picts, who inhabited the North? Or was it merely a symbol of Roman power and wealth? What was life like for soldiers stationed along its expanse? How was the extraordinary structure built - with what technology, skills, and materials?

Historia
The struggle between Rome and Carthage in the Punic Wars was arguably the greatest and most desperate conflict of antiquity. The forces involved and the casualties suffered by both sides were far greater than in any wars fought before the modern era, while the eventual outcome had far-reaching consequences for the history of the Western World, namely the ascendancy of Rome. An epic of war and battle, this is also the story of famous generals and leaders: Hannibal, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, and his grandson Scipio Aemilianus, who would finally bring down the walls of Carthage.

For centuries, the Vikings have swept out of the Norse countries and fallen on whatever lands they could reach aboard their longships, and few could resist the power of their violent onslaught. They came at first to plunder and then to settle, an encroachment fiercely resisted wherever they went. Such was the case in the southern lands of Ireland. En route to the Viking longphort there, known as Dubh-linn, Thorgrim Night Wolf and Ornolf the Restless stumble across an Irish ship.

The Roman empire shaped the culture of the Western world against which all other great powers are compared. Stretching from the north of Britain to the Sahara, and from the Atlantic coast to the Euphrates, it imposed peace and prosperity on an unprecedented scale. However, the exception lay in the east, where the Parthian and then Persian empires ruled over great cities and the trade routes to mysterious lands beyond. This was the place Alexander the Great had swept through, creating a dream of glory and conquest which tantalized Greeks and Romans alike.

Pax Romana examines how the Romans came to control so much of the world and asks whether traditionally favorable images of the Roman peace are true. Goldsworthy vividly recounts the rebellions of the conquered and examines why they broke out, why most failed, and how they became exceedingly rare. He reveals that hostility was just one reaction to the arrival of Rome and that from the outset, conquered peoples collaborated, formed alliances, and joined invaders, causing resistance movements to fade away.

Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great were two of the greatest generals Rome had ever produced. Together they had brought vast stretches of territory under Roman dominion. In 49 BC they turned against each other and plunged Rome into civil war. In this audiobook, Adrian Goldsworthy relates the gripping story of this desperate power struggle. Drawing on original accounts of the war, he examines how legion was pitched against legion in a vicious battle for political domination of the vast Roman world.

For three young former schoolmates from South Wales, their war is only just beginning. These young men, and thousands of others, will soon be a part of one of the bloodiest and most brutal parts of the Normandy campaign: the battle for Hill 112.

In AD 200, the Roman Empire seemed unassailable, its vast territory accounting for most of the known world. By the end of the fifth century, Roman rule had vanished in Western Europe and much of northern Africa, and only a shrunken Eastern Empire remained. This was a period of remarkable personalities, from the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius to emperors like Diocletian, who portrayed themselves as tough, even brutal, soldiers.

High praise to Peter Noble
Noble catches the essence of a range of characters-genders, dialects, classes, intelligence, education, occupations, philosophies, attitudes, mores, beliefs. This is an entertaining book-not as good as the first volume, VINLANDA. It is historic fiction first with murder mystery, myth, and very well written military battles. If one has read some nonfiction on Roman military function, it would enhance one’s enjoyment of this trilogy as Goldsworthy uses terms describing weapons, military formations, and tactics.

Splendid but....
Peter Noble is an excellent narrator and I've enjoyed his work through all three books of the series. I was a bit disappointed that in Brigantia that he did not continue his correct pronunciation of Latin as he did in the first two. It was so marvelous and refreshing to have characters saying names, military units and place names in true Latin pronunciation.
Perhaps people complained and he adjusted his pronunciation to fit, but I enjoyed the other.
This book needed an epilogue or a couple more chapters to even out the ending. It left listeners hanging and after getting to know the characters so well it was a disappointment. Perhaps there is to be another novel in the future?

This series just continues to get better
I have read quite a few fiction series set in the age of Rome and many of these have been more particularly placed in Britannia, Some have been good, others meh. I approached this series with mixed expectations. For me it took most of the first book to get fully engaged, but I have really found the the next two books to be total page turners and am looking forward to the next episode. I believe the author’s pace, plot lines and character development have been superb.

The Best Novel I have read in years!
I have read everything that Adrian Goldsworthy has written all history until these three novels. This Ferox Series is just wonderful. I can’t express the enjoyment I experienced reading this series. Strong characters not quite historical fiction but a comfortable read for a fan of that genre. Do yourself a favor and purchase these three books you won’t regret it. I’m sure I have left a review before but somehow after changing phones I was asked to review after I re-listened to the series. They are as good as the first time I listened. Mr. Goldsworthy is just a great writer well done Sir.

Fantastic third installlment
Spoiler-free review: The third installment of the Vindolanda saga is as compelling and full of twists as the first two. New characters are introduced who bring renewed depth to the story, but the mainstays all have their part to play.
The plot also uncovers even richer and more intricate details about Ferox's past and his dueling identity as both Roman Centurion and Silures Prince.
