Absolutely Fascinating

I recently did my ancestry and found out I am 94% West African. I wanted to know more about the land I learned so little about in America beyond the slave trade. What a rich and beautiful culture. We were so much more than slaves. We come from a land of powerful, rich, intelligent brave Kings & Queens!

A much needed correction of world history.

I loved this book. it read more like an encyclopedia than anything else. This is an overview of thousands of years of history so being detailed about all the ancient African kingdoms just isn't feasible. however, this book does an excellent job at explaining when and where these great peoples were located in time and place and firmly destroys the idiotic notion that Africa didn't provide much to the collective knowledge and advancement of world culture and heritage.

if you want a basic overview of what history Africa has and its place at the top of civilization this is a great starter book.

Wish there was more!

It’s so hard to find African history books. This one had a lot of great info that I didn’t know before reading it. I hope people keep collecting more African history and give the continent its due respect!

Great start for a nonspecialists.

Highly recommended for the layperson who wants to find out more about Africa before her encounter with Europeans after Rome and Greece. However, there were some choppy bits of information that might have been left out completely or needed some more clarification. As I stated, this is a good start.

Content is OK but the Writing is amateurish

The book is OK for an introductory work. The book doesn’t explain why the kingdoms chosen before 300 were all well to the north (and mostly northeast) of the continent – one expects that it’s a matter of where written records are available to historians. Including the Ghana and Mali empires in a volume of ancient history is a stretch according the standard usage of “ancient history”. The book’s writing is OK but it should have been regularly improved by a more articulate editor. It would be hard to count the number of times I improved wording of a just finished sentence in my head.
