The Jewish people are one of the oldest living people groups on the planet. The Jews lived alongside the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Phoenicians, and Sumerians - all of whom have since disappeared from the pages of history. Yet the Jews still remain. Despite all of the odds, Jewish culture, language, laws, and religion have remained intact over the course of thousands of years.

Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today’s clash of civilizations. From King David to Barack Obama, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of three thousand years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism and coexistence. This is how Jerusalem became Jerusalem, and the only city that exists twice - in heaven and on earth.

Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

In this seminal work that has spent more than 30 years in print, Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin explain the reasons behind anti-Semitism, the world's preoccupation with the Jews and Israel, and why now more than ever the world needs to confront anti-Jewish sentiment. Prager and Telushkin examine in detail how anti-Semitism is a unique hatred - no other prejudice has been as universal, deep, or permanent - and how the concept of the "chosen people" spawned that hatred.

Historia
October 2023 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, a conflict that shaped the modern Middle East. The War was a trauma for Israel, a dangerous superpower showdown, and, following the oil embargo, a pivotal reordering of the global economic order. The Jewish State came shockingly close to defeat. After the war, Prime Minister Golda Meir resigned in disgrace, and a 9/11-style commission investigated the "debacle." But, argues Uri Kaufman, from the perspective of a half century, the War can be seen as a pivotal victory for Israel.

Tracing Yiddish civilization from its roots in the Diaspora to the present, Paul Kriwaczek combines intimate family anecdote, travelogue, historical research, and interviews with scholars to give us a rich portrait of a nearly extinguished culture as it survived across the centuries. He begins his chronicle in Jerusalem, with the destruction of the Jewish temple at the hands of the Romans in the year 70. We see the burgeoning exile population disperse, moving outward and northward throughout the following centuries, making their mark in more far flung cities under Roman rule.

The Chosen Wars tells the dramatic story of how Judaism redefined itself in America in the 18th and 19th centuries - the personalities that fought each other and shaped its evolution and, importantly, the force of the American dynamic that prevailed over an ancient religion. Determined to take their places as equals in the young nation, American Jews rejected identity as a separate nation and embraced a secular America. Judaism became an American religion.

Once in a generation, a historian will redefine his field, producing a book that demands to be read or heard - a product of electrifying scholarship conveyed with commanding skill. Diarmaid MacCulloch's Christianity is such a book. Breathtaking in ambition, it ranges back to the origins of the Hebrew Bible and covers the world, following the three main strands of the Christian faith.

Historia
In the tradition of Jared Diamond and Jacques Barzun, prize-winning historian Anthony Pagden presents a sweeping history of the long struggle between East and West, from the Greeks to the present day.
The relationship between East and West has always been one of turmoil. In this historical tour de force, a renowned historian leads us from the world of classical antiquity, through the Dark Ages, to the Crusades, Europe's resurgence, and the dominance of the Ottoman Empire, which almost shattered Europe entirely. Pagden travels from Napoleon in Egypt to Europe's carving up of the finally moribund Ottomans - creating the modern Middle East along the way - and on to the present struggles in Iraq.

At a time when men and women were prepared to kill - and be killed - for their faith, the Protestant Reformation tore the Western world apart. Acclaimed as the definitive account of these epochal events, Diarmaid MacCulloch's award-winning history brilliantly recreates the religious battles of priests, monarchs, scholars, and politicians - from the zealous Martin Luther and his 95 Theses to the polemical John Calvin to the radical Igantius Loyola, from the tortured Thomas Cranmer to the ambitious Philip II.

González, author of the highly praised three-volume History of Christian Thought, presents a narrative history of Christianity from the early church to the dawn of the Protestant reformation. The world hates the Church that Jesus founded, just as He said it would (John 15:18). It reviles her doctrines, mocks her moral teachings and invents lies about her history. In every age, but especially in our modern day, historians and political powers have distorted the facts about her past (or just made up novel falsehoods from scratch) to make the Church, and the civilization it fostered, seem corrupt, backward, or simply evil.

For the first time, religious self-identification is on the decline in American. Some analysts have cited as cause a post-9/11 perception: that faith in general is a source of aggression, intolerance, and divisiveness - something bad for society. But how accurate is that view? With deep learning and sympathetic understanding, Karen Armstrong sets out to discover the truth about religion and violence in each of the world’s great traditions, taking us on an astonishing journey from prehistoric times to the present.

This incisive history upends the complacency that confines anti-Judaism to the ideological extremes in the Western tradition. With deep learning and elegance, David Nirenberg shows how foundational anti-Judaism is to the history of the West. Questions of how we are Jewish and, more critically, how and why we are not have been churning within the Western imagination throughout its history. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans; Christians and Muslims of every period; even the secularists of modernity have used Judaism in constructing their visions of the world.

A historical tour de force that demolishes the myths and taboos that have surrounded Jewish and Israeli history, The Invention of the Jewish People offers a new account of both that demands to be reckoned with. Was there really a forced exile in the first century, at the hands of the Romans? Should we regard the Jewish people, throughout two millennia, as both a distinct ethnic group and a putative nation—returned at last to its Biblical homeland? In this iconoclastic work of history, Shlomo Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel's future.

A great book ruined by a screeching narrator
Out of many audiobooks I’ve listened to, this is the first one that’s simply painfully unbearable because of the narrator whose voice tone is equivalent to a screeching cat simultaneously clawing at a chalkboard.

Returned because of poor narration
The narrator's voice was mono-tonal, and she managed to mispronounce just about every Hebrew related word. If you're hired to narrate History of the Jews, is it too much to expect the narrator to correctly pronounce the greatest Jewish philosopher? I returned it and purchased the Kindle version instead. I'll use one of those robotic readers to listen to it. Probably get better hit rate on pronunciation.

Good story, not such good audio
What did you love best about A History of the Jews?
This book gives great insight into the overarching history of the Jewish people, though its breadth takes a bit away from its depth, though this is probably a mercy since there is just so much history to review here!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I'm sorry to say that the narration was not very satisfying. Nadia May is a wonderful reader, but here, perhaps because of poor recording equipment?, her voice sounded yappy and incessant. I was surprised by this since some of her other readings have been among my favorites.
Any additional comments?
This is one of those books which is great to fall asleep to. I look for a good long book that will send me off to sleep, and this one is definitely in that category! On the other hand, listening to it during my waking hours has been very interesting. My respect for the Jewish people, and my compassion for their years and years of suffering has intensified thanks to this book. I believe that this is the sort of history many people should be aware of.

Inaccurate history
It mentions that Saul was killed one year after becoming king and that Samuel mourned the death of Saul. This is totally inaccurate. Saul was king for 40 years. Samuel died before Saul. It’s the reason Saul went to the witch to bring up Samuel. Weird!!!!

Excellent!
Paul Johnson, as usual, was thorough and thoughtful in his imitable examination of one of the most complex peoples and their long and complex history--the Jews. Most importantly he was very fair in portraying the good, the bad and the ugly of their long saga... and of all humanity in general. I doff my hat to this masterpiece.

Thousands of years of history made accessible and remarkable
The Jews are a fascinating people, having survived for 3,000 years, and being the precursor, even inspirer, to Christianity and Islam.
How did Jews outlast Rome, Western Rome and Byzantium?
The book answers this fascinating question by delving headlong into the complexity, the tugs and pulls of Judaism with the practical reality of living and most of the time…basic survival.
Anti-Semitism is stripped bare; the origins, and its evolutions. Why it happened, and why it’s a load of bogus. A people separate from the rest, secretive, and a little bit strict in their ethics and ways of doing things, the Jews made for a natural outlier, and not always the best of friends, as Hadrian would attest before crushing Judea and creating the Jewish Diaspora. But the reactions to this state of things is hysterical and completely out of proportion with the actual realities of the situation, such as the blood libel conspiracy,
Its fierce form would arrive with the persecutions of the Medieval Church and Byzantium, and persist in various forms. At once useful and strongly proficient in the societies they made home, and at once strongly traditional and sequestered off.
And then Anti-Semitism would truly transmorph into its worst forms with the turn of the 19th century, and culminate in the personality of Adolf Hitler in the 20th century.
An overreaction to correlations, and a willful stupidity, anti-Semitic nonsense is revealed for the origins of its prejudice, and exposed for its stupidity, but it never takes an overwhelming focus, and Jewish survival against it played a role in their own activities, for better or worse, and helped to shape their character, individually and collectively.
All while the narrator takes a balanced hand in describing the historical trajectory of this people. If you want to understand the Jews and their place in history and the world, this is a great audiobook to listen to.
