Dr. Gene A Constant, DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, initiated in June 1983 Has completed over two decades of formal schooling. Honorably Discharged United States Navy Honorably discharged United States Marine Corps. "He remained calm, even in life-threatening situations," says Major Meeks, USMC. Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia, December 1975 Dr. Constant has published his autobiography "there can be a better life". There are far too many broken families, with needlessly suffering children. Your cycle of despair can end if you find the courage to change it. I was able to achieve an important triumph, turning adversity into opportunity. WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS I had no idea what would become of me. My tour in the US Navy wondrously transformed me from a broken teenager to that of an enthusiastic young man. Return to my pre-naval environment erased any hope that I had had for a new existence. I begrudgingly began to accept the reality that, despite my best efforts, my life would always be one of poverty, consisting of little more than washing dishes. When opportunity came knocking, I opened the door and welcomed the two-week temp work at JCPenney. Would I have heard the knocking if I was wallowing in self-pity? I took a chance, in large part because I had nothing left to lose, and nowhere else to go. Your road will be different than mine. I keep reminding my wife that “everyone is different” and that “everyone’s expectations are different”. The antithesis of others is welcome. From that diversity, we who share a thesis can resolve our differences. We would all be part of a marvelous synthetic world. Education beyond the 8th grade seemed to be insurmountable. Once again, opportunity knocked when an acquaintance insisted that I talk to Richland Community College. I opened that door and soon thereafter earned my ASBA, BSBA, MBA and DBA degrees. When opportunity knocks, listen for that sound, then open your door. Famous inventor Thomas Edison is reported to have said, “Recognizing opportunity is so difficult for most people because it goes around disguised in overalls, looking like hard work!” It is my fondest wish that one or more of my experiences will help you to complete your journey. Yes, there can be a better life. It is up to you. For me, mine has been a life well lived.
