About this listen

Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, precise in every decision she makes. When her dark past threatens to resurface, she decides to take precautions to protect herself by enrolling in self-defense classes at her gym. Her instructor, Ryker Campbell, is the tattooed womanizer everyone warns about. Kaiya attempts to resist Ryker's advances, but the more time they spend training together, the harder it is for Kaiya to resist him. Ryker's view on relationships is simple: strictly sex, nothing more. Haunted by demons from his past, he never allows himself to become attached to any woman. No attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. He doesn't realize that his whole world is about to be turned upside down when Kaiya enters his self-defense class. Determined to have her, at least for one night, Ryker sets a plan into motion that will change both of their lives forever. Will love be able to heal their scars, or are they too deep to overcome?

So-So

I loved the male narrator but could have done without the female. I did like how it was both a male and female voice though.

Beautiful, Sexy, and Gut-wrenching Love Story!!!!

What did you love best about The Scars of Us?

I absolutely loved the whole book. But, the subject matter was handled beautifully by the author.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Ryker. His strength was the backbone to help Kaiya over one her inner demons. Plus, he was so hot.

What does Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought their performance was amazing. They were perfect for the characters, clear voices, and read with so much emotion. Something I would have never experienced reading the book on my own.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I actually did read it all in one sitting. I could not put it down.

Any additional comments?

This was the first book I have read by Nikki Narvaez, but it absolutely will jot be the last. Her writing is not only descriptive, but she makes you experience all the emotions the characters in the story are feeling. I actually cried during certain scenes which rarely do when reading a book. This was a very sensitive subject, but Nikki handled it beautiful and gives hope to those who otherwise thought they would never find someone to love them and the scars they possess. Well done Nikki Narvaez.

3.5 Scar'd Star’s

Let me explain my rating, I felt like there as something missing. As if we are always waiting for something. I wanted to love this book hard, I loved all the teasers and synopsis.

Kaiya Marlow hasn’t had an easy life and she feels as though she is hanging on by a very thin thread. Her only real family is her brother Camden. He is fiercely loyal and wants to protect Kaiya at all costs.
I enjoyed Kaiya’s character although I felt she felt sorry for herself to much and I know what you’re thinking but look what she has gone through yes I get it but we don’t have to be reminded over and over.
I admire her sprit to do something so she won’t be a victim again so she signs up for self-defence and who do we see a Mr. Ryker Campbell hot tattooed bad boy? Well whoever he is Kaiya doesn’t feel scared around him and that’s a huge thing for her.

"I can't be fixed. Some demons just don't leave you alone. They haunt you forever." – Kaiya

Ryker Campbell has his own past he is dealing with; he isn’t looking for anything long term he is looking for Ms. Right now. And he has his eyes on Kaiya. Only when she walks in to his class he’s trying to be good and not screw the clients, well any more.
I loved the way he was with her he knew something was off but he didn’t know what and he would work around her quirks. I really enjoyed this part of the book watching them come together. Although they had to work through, some growing pains.

“Always fighting, my Warrior.” – Ryker

Good book it will leave you with the feeling of empowerment and know that healing is a process.

I want to be a 'Warrior' like Kaiya!

What did you love best about The Scars of Us?

The plot - it was full of surprises and intensity. Once these two committed, things got even more enthralling.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scars of Us?

The climax.

Which scene was your favorite?

The sauna scene - no way could I do the same, but it was literally hotter than hot.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, most definitely!

Any additional comments?

Kaiya and Ryker were both complicated and courageous characters. And I'm super bummed that the sequel, Mending Scars (The Scars of Us #2) hasn't been produced and released in the audiobook format. It's been almost 2 full years since the book's release, and I would have thought the audiobook edition would be available by now. The narrating duo did such a fantastic job that it's a real loss for audiophiles not to be able to continue this series via audiobook. I hope an audiobook producer (or the author if she can afford to self-produce it) takes a chance on it and releases it someday soon.

Sweet story, hard topic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you believe in love, this book is a good one for you. Both have their scars, afraid to let anyone peek over their walls. But love wins in the end, as it should be.

What about Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott ’s performance did you like?

Kai and Wen play off each other to bring the listener an immersive experience. There is actual emotion, not just a rote reading.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely yes.

Crazy good!

This book was a wonderful example of the scars we all gain as we go through life. Some worse than others but we all gain them in some way shape or form. It is how we battle past them that counts. You feel for the characters and become so immersed in their journey that it is hard to part from them. We are all scarred and deserve to be loved - scars and all.

Narration is amazing- The Duet style narrating adds something special to the book. Wen's voice is something i can never get tired of.
