Acerca de esta escucha

Two immortal creatures. One dangerous bargain.

After the death of her mother, Aheia finds herself stained by more blood than she can hide in the perpetual daylight of her home of Keloseros. She escapes the realm but pays the price: giving up her immortality and her powers–once a Mithra with light at her fingertips, she becomes near-mortal. Her desperate search for asylum leads her to the doorstep of the only place out of her abusive family’s reach—a realm that deals in death and darkness unapologetically—Aljira.

But nothing in this world is free, and to buy her way to dubious safety, she’s forced to give up the only thing she has left to barter.

Her soul in exchange for seven days in the devil's realm.

Arioch, the ruler of the Nephilim, is eager to dangle his new little pet in front of the Mithra who have caused irreparable damage in his life, but he doesn’t expect the effect Aheia’s soul has on both of them once it's stamped on his arm. The pull between them is all-consuming. They crave each other, between sharp words and angry exchanges in an increasingly passionate bond that threatens to shatter the delicate balance of everything.

Arioch and Aheia…

Keloseros and Aljira…

Even life and death.

Note: Helfyre is an adult fantasy romance that contains graphic violence, general dark themes, swearing, and sex scenes—some of which include dubious consent—and should in no way be misconstrued as a depiction of a healthy relationship.

Okay so… Helfyre by Mariel Pomeroy. Where do I even begin? This book came with the darkly subscription and let me tell you—STUNNING special edition. The cover alone made me want to ignore the mixed reviews and dive headfirst into the chaos. And chaos it was, babes.

Let’s just say this: if you asked me to explain the plot like a kindergarten teacher, I could manage. But anything beyond that? My brain said 404 World-Building Not Found. This book was dense. Like… high-fantasy-heavy-on-the-mythology kind of dense. I tried the audiobook + reading at the same time strategy hoping it would bridge the language/world-building gap. It helped a little… but I still found myself mentally sprinting just to keep up.

From what I did grasp: we have Aheia, who flees her realm after losing her parents and being tormented by her evil stepfather (classic fairy tale villain vibes—10/10 hate him). After killing off her creepy husband (girlboss move), she ends up in the realm of broody Arioch, who inherited his kingdom after his brother got snatched by said evil stepfather.

Aheia gets temporary asylum if she gives Arioch her soul for seven days. Because, duh, that’s a totally normal visa requirement. And naturally, soul-bonding = sexual tension, so yeah, there’s spice. Not a ton, but some. Enough to keep the tension simmering.

Plot twist: Aheia isn’t just some lost girl—she’s got powers she definitely shouldn’t have. Cue undead graveyard attacks, near-death experiences, soul-return drama, and the classic “I’m breaking up with you for your own good” betrayal moment. Arioch discovers his brother is alive and has to trade Aheia back to her stepdad to save him—but not really, because he’s secretly plotting her rescue. Insert stabby betrayal from said brother and an ending that has Aheia literally getting yanked from Hell.

Confused? SAME.

There was so much going on—so many characters, political plot threads, and magic systems—that it became hard to care about anything fully. I spent more time trying to decode the world than I did emotionally connecting with it. That said, the audiobook was solid and helped bring the story to life a bit more.

Would I read book 2? Maybe… if my TBR shrinks or I’m feeling brave. Right now, it’s not a priority, but I’m mildly curious how this soul-swapping, hell-escaping, realm-hopping drama ends.

📚 If you love high fantasy with elaborate world-building and don’t mind piecing things together with a metaphysical magnifying glass, give it a shot! Just maybe keep a map, glossary, and emotional support snack nearby. 😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.75 stars 🌶️🌶️ Spice Level: Mildly toasty soul-sharing tension
