  • Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law?
    Jun 27 2025

Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law?

Is a certain amount of stress good for you?

    Definitely!

Is there a point at which the amount of stress becomes detrimental?

    Most certainly!

Is there a law, a model, or a formula that tells us how much stress is too much?

Contrary to popular opinion, probably not!

In this episode Tom airs his frustrations about an often rolled out piece of research called the ‘Yerkes-Dodson Law’. We discuss the law’s origins, what Yerkes and Dodson were actually measuring and how the law has become a universal measure for all sorts of theories.

As we often say, all models are wrong but some are useful. When it comes to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, we may well be exploring a law that doesn’t actually exist.

    Jun 20 2025

Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2

In our last episode we explored how leadership might show up in the coaching room, even if we’re not formally engaged in leadership coaching and why, as Transformational Coaches, we might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions.

In this episode we’re putting an element of theory behind the concept of leadership and in doing so, explore a number of different leadership styles; ten in fact. We discuss the pros and cons of each leadership style and when it might be useful to engage in each. We also offer examples of coaching situations where we have each discussed leadership styles with our coachees.

Join us in this episode of the podcast, where we complete our conversation on leadership in the coaching room.

  • Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 1
    Jun 13 2025

If you’ve coached an individual within the NHS there is a good chance that you have been called upon to have a conversation around leadership.

Not necessarily about the mechanics of the leadership role but perhaps around how the coachee shows up and how they interact with other people.

Leadership presents itself throughout organisations and often those without a defined leadership role are taking responsibility for heading up certain initiatives or leading on certain aspects of the culture.

Tom has been coaching leaders for 15 years and has found that the main topic of conversation in the coaching room for leaders is other people and the relationship dynamics that the coachee is experiencing and perhaps struggling with.

Beyond their people issues, leaders often use coaching as a safe space to explore their concerns, their worries and their insecurities. Being in a leadership role is often a lonely place and being able to have confidential conversations with someone you trust is invaluable.

Join us in this episode of the podcast, the first of two leadership episodes, where we explore why we, as Transformational Coaches, might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions.

  • Episode 110: Coaching Topics: Difficult Conversations - Why do we avoid them?
    May 30 2025

Your coachees may tell you about a sticky situation or problematic people that they have in their lives, and talk about the stress that this is causing them. Often, one of the options that the coachee has to help resolve the issue is to have a conversation with someone else involved, but they may be avoiding this option.

Understanding why a coachee might be choosing not to have what they might perceive as a difficult conversation is useful and may help you to facilitate the coachee’s thinking. This may well result in them deciding to have a crucial conversation with someone that improves their situation.

So in this episode we start to explore the topic of difficult conversations, discussing why people might not be having them, and looking at what might help your coachee to see them from a new perspective.

  • Episode 109: More Love in the Coaching Room
    May 23 2025

If you listened to Episode 108 you will have heard Tom discussing the ways in which we might show up in the coaching room.

Tom made the point that an approach of judgement might be an easy way for us to show up in our coaching , but perhaps love might be a more useful way to be in order to draw out the real coachee sitting before us.

Well, one podcast episode didn’t provide Tom with enough space to consider the fact that often either the coach or the coachee could show up in fear in the coaching room, for all sorts of reasons.

So this episode continues where Tom left off, and offers his reflections on fear and how an approach of love might dissolve the fear. There are some philosophical musings and even some poetry in this episode, so join Tom, flying solo once again, in another podcast focused on love in the coaching room.

  • Episode 108: Love in the Coaching Room
    May 16 2025

Just to avoid any confusion, we are not addressing the topics of romantic love, sexual attraction or attachment in the coaching room in this episode, although they might crop up in a future episode. Tom is on his own for this podcast and is offering some reflections on how we might show up as a coach.

It would be very easy for us to show up in judgement of our coachees and to prove our worth by pointing out the error of their ways. We’re the experts after all. We know what’s what.

Or maybe, just maybe, we can show up with love, and hold that loving space for someone whilst they explore their situation fully. In showing up with love, we allow the coachee to be their true, authentic self and to feel comfortable in being vulnerable and open with us in what is a protected space and a relationship of trust.

Join Tom in his musings about the nature of love in the coaching room. As he meanders through the podcast he’ll be throwing in some reflections on his values and telling some stories to illustrate how love might show up in our coaching.

  • Episode 107: Coaching Challenge – Presence
    May 9 2025

We consider the coaching space a sacred one. It is a safe, welcoming, confidential and non-judgemental space that allows the coachee to engage in conversation in an authentic, open and honest way. It is a space that fosters trust and connection.

That’s the space that we, as coaches, are looking to create in the coaching room and that requires some presence on our part. But what do we mean when we talk about coaching presence?

In this episode we explore what coaching presence is. We also explore how we might create the optimal conditions for an open and honest coaching conversation that generates new thinking on the part of the coachee.
