  • Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law?
    Jun 27 2025

Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law?

Is a certain amount of stress good for you?

    Definitely!

Is there a point at which the amount of stress becomes detrimental?

    Most certainly!

Is there a law, a model, or a formula that tells us how much stress is too much?

Contrary to popular opinion, probably not!

In this episode Tom airs his frustrations about an often rolled out piece of research called the ‘Yerkes-Dodson Law’. We discuss the law’s origins, what Yerkes and Dodson were actually measuring and how the law has become a universal measure for all sorts of theories.

As we often say, all models are wrong but some are useful. When it comes to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, we may well be exploring a law that doesn’t actually exist.

Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2

In our last episode we explored how leadership might show up in the coaching room, even if we’re not formally engaged in leadership coaching and why, as Transformational Coaches, we might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions.

In this episode we’re putting an element of theory behind the concept of leadership and in doing so, explore a number of different leadership styles; ten in fact. We discuss the pros and cons of each leadership style and when it might be useful to engage in each. We also offer examples of coaching situations where we have each discussed leadership styles with our coachees.

Join us in this episode of the podcast, where we complete our conversation on leadership in the coaching room.

  • Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 1
    Jun 13 2025

If you’ve coached an individual within the NHS there is a good chance that you have been called upon to have a conversation around leadership.

Not necessarily about the mechanics of the leadership role but perhaps around how the coachee shows up and how they interact with other people.

Leadership presents itself throughout organisations and often those without a defined leadership role are taking responsibility for heading up certain initiatives or leading on certain aspects of the culture.

Tom has been coaching leaders for 15 years and has found that the main topic of conversation in the coaching room for leaders is other people and the relationship dynamics that the coachee is experiencing and perhaps struggling with.

Beyond their people issues, leaders often use coaching as a safe space to explore their concerns, their worries and their insecurities. Being in a leadership role is often a lonely place and being able to have confidential conversations with someone you trust is invaluable.

Join us in this episode of the podcast, the first of two leadership episodes, where we explore why we, as Transformational Coaches, might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions.
