• #13 Mr Ryan Ross - Fluoroscopy & Radiology Technologists
    Jan 26 2025

Hello and welcome to the World of Pain MD podcast, where we discuss all things pain with the experts.

I am Dr Derick Davis, a physician specializing in pain management.

In this episode, we speak with Mr. Ryan Ross about fluoroscopy and radiology technologists in general, specifically regarding C-arm use in the OR.

Mr Ross is originally from Scotland, hence why his accent is so incredible. He initially was a drummer; however, he later owned, and as he describes in this episode, he found a keen interest in imaging and particularly radiography. He attended Mercer County Community College, graduating with an Associate of Applied Science in Radiography in 2013. In 2015 he moved to Nashville and worked at Vanderbilt University in their level 1 trauma center as a surgical radiology technologist. Mr. Ross eventually transitioned into education. He started as the clinical coordinator for South College of Radiography in Nashville in 2021 and is now the Program Director for their radiography program.

One simply cannot stress enough how important fluoroscopy imaging is to the field of pain. We rely on it for most of our procedures, and as such, we often depend on our radiology technologists’ expertise. In my conversations with Ryan, I was struck by the relative dearth of education for technologists regarding the use of the C-arm and fluoroscopy in general.

Mr. Ross not only has a podcast of his own, he also has a YouTube channel and has developed equipment, known as the C-arm training phantom to help hone and educate technologists and fill this educational void. I will make sure to link all of his affiliated websites in the show notes.

As always, thanks so much for watching or listening; I hope you enjoy this episode and learn something.

  • #12 Dr Mairin Jerome - Orthobiologics & Disc Dysbiosis
    Jan 12 2025

Hello and welcome to the World of Pain MD podcast where we discuss all things pain with the experts.

I am Dr Derick Davis, a physician specializing in pain management.

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Mairin Jerome about orthobiologics and regenerative medicine

Dr. Jerome is from the Big Apple - New York City! She did her undergraduate studies at Brown University, where she studied studio art with an emphasis on sculpture. She went to medical school at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She completed her residency at Emory University School of Medicine (my home program) and was recognized as resident of the year for 3 years in a row and served her last year as chief resident. She did her fellowship in interventional orthopedics and regenerative medicine at the Centeno-Schultz Clinic. Dr. Jerome is obviously a person of many talents, yet she remains personable, passionate, and what I think to be a pioneer in the field of regenerative medicine, having published extensively on the topic.

We briefly touch on a fascinating topic I was unaware of until I met Dr. Jerome: dysbiosis of the intervertebral discs.

As always thanks so much for watching or listening, I hope you enjoy this episode and learn something.

The article referenced regarding intervertebral disc dysbiosis:

Human intervertebral discs harbour a unique microbiome and dysbiosis determines health and disease. • #11 Dr Mohammed Issa - Harvard Pain Fellowship
    Dec 22 2024

Hello and welcome to the World of Pain MD podcast where we discuss all things pain with the experts.

I am Dr Derick Davis, a physician specializing in pain management.

So, as pain medicine fellowship season starts to kick off in full swing here, I thought there would be no better person to discuss their opinion on what makes a successful pain applicant than my program director, Dr Mohammed Issa.

Dr. Issa went to medical school at the University of Alexandria in Egypt. He completed his residency in psychiatry at West Virginia University, where he was also chief resident. He subsequently finished three fellowships (three!) - first in addiction psychiatry at Yale, then Pain medicine at Harvard through Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and then a forensic psychiatry fellowship at West Virginia University. He is the perfect guest for this topic not just because he is a program director with more than half a decade of experience but also because he is so knowledgeable and incredibly insightful.

I hope this helps to give you a perspective of a pain fellowship program director and more largely into the field of pain itself.

Applying for a fellowship, regardless of the specialty, is a daunting and relatively expensive process. Do not be too hard on yourself during it and wherever you end up will be the right place. And frankly if you feel it is not, this fellowship is only one year. The field of pain is a fascinating and meaningful endeavor and I wish you the best in its pursuit

  • #10 Dr Kenneth Mautner - Orthobiologics and Ultrasound
    Dec 11 2024

Hello and welcome to the World of Pain MD podcast where we discuss all things pain with the experts.

I am Dr Derick Davis, a physician specializing in pain management.

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Kenneth Mautner about orthobiologics and ultrasound in msk medicine.

Dr. Mautner is from New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Washington University in St. Louis for undergraduate and completed his medical school at Tulane University back in his hometown. He did his residency in PM&R at Emory followed by a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. Mautner has held multiple notable roles, including serving as the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director at Emory University and the head team physician for the Atlanta Hawks, as well as a team physician for the Atlanta Braves. His contributions to sports medicine and orthobiologics are immense, with dozens of research publications and two co-authored books: Atlas of Interventional Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Musculoskeletal Physical Examination: An Evidence-Based Approach.

Orthobiologics has taken off as a field. However, there are many hang-ups and obstacles, the likes of which Dr. Mautner discusses in this episode. I am looking forward to the inevitable progression of this subject matter given its significant potential.

As always thanks so much for watching or listening, I hope you enjoy this episode and learn something.

  • #9 Dr Kevin Vu - Pain Fellowship Applications
    Nov 25 2024

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Kevin Vu about pain fellowship applications.

Dr. Vu is from Austin, Texas. He attended UT Dallas for undergraduate studies, where he participated in the accelerated program and studied Biology. He subsequently went to medical school at UT Southwestern. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to do a residency in Physical medicine and rehabilitation at Spaulding and is now in a fellowship subspecializing in pain medicine.

Full disclosure: Dr. Vu is my co-fellow, and we are both in Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. I am biased toward this program and Kevin, as he is absolutely brilliant, and I love this program.

But speaking of programs, pain medicine is an ever-evolving field. Getting to a pain fellowship can appear daunting to some of us in residency or medical school because despite having an interest in the field, it may prove difficult to get significant hands-on experience while in residency or medical school.

So, if you’re a medical student or resident, hopefully, this episode sheds some light on various aspects of the fellowship application process.

As always thanks so much for watching or listening, I hope you enjoy this episode and learn something.

  • #6 Dr Vinita Singh - Peripheral Nerve Stimulators
    Sep 15 2024

In this episode, we speak about peripheral nerve stimulators with Dr Vinita Singh

Dr Singh is double-board certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. She went to medical school at the Armed Forces Medical College in India, did residency at Indiana University School of Medicine then fellowship at Emory University. Dr Singh is equal parts brilliant and positive energy. I am very happy I was able to speak to her about

Peripheral nerve stimulators are not a new technology but we have seen them become more and more popular in the pain space as we have moved away from using opioids to treat pain. They work in much the same way as a TENS unit, in essence, stimulating one nerve fiber to block a pain signal of another. We discuss them in further detail with Dr Singh and her approach to their use.
