John Middleton said Friday at Penn that “we’ll probably not win” the Juan Soto sweepstakes. It’s not a surprise, but it was as candid as anybody had been in talking about the Phillies’ chances to sign the superstar outfielder.

So, the Phillies don’t expect to sign Soto. Do they have any chance at signing Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki? His team announced they will post him for MLB teams, but everybody considers West Coast teams like the Dodgers, Giants and Padres to have a huge advantage over the Phils, who have not signed a Japanese player direct from Japan in their history.

They also expressed their appreciation for Bryce Harper’s postseason success in relation to Aaron Judge’s struggles, considering how few pitches Harper sees in the strike zone in the postseason.
