  • Ep. 203 J. Dana Trent - Finding Your Way Through Trauma Towards a Life of Meaning and Belonging
    Jul 19 2024

I can’t imagine coming home from preschool and being christened into the drug trafficking business by your father. But Dana Trent can because that’s exactly what happened to her. In this conversation, Dana and I discuss her story growing up with two mentally unwell parents as told through her excellent memoir Between Two Trailers.Dana shares experiences with childhood trauma, identity formation, and spiritual practices that aid healing. We discuss the role of Christian community in supporting mental health through practices like active listening, vulnerability, and meeting basic needs. She emphasizes developing empathy for those struggling and using churches as hubs for open conversations and small groups. It’s a fantastic conversation that dives deep into trauma, identity, and healing. So join us as we find our way out of adverse childhood experiences into a life of meaning and belonging.

    J. Dana Trent is a speaker, professor, award-winning spirituality author, and minister. A graduate of Duke Divinity School, she teaches world religions and critical thinking at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina.

  • Ep. 202 Bryan Loritts - Enduring Friendship
    Jul 16 2024

There is a loneliness epidemic. We’ve lost our ability to connect to one another. In this conversation with Bryan Loritts we discuss the importance of enduring friendships. God's primary way of shaping people is through relationships with others and the Bible places a high premium on relationships, seen in concepts like the Trinity and salvation. Jesus modeled community by choosing 12 disciples to be with. We talk about the idea that friendships are important for accountability, correction and preventing isolation that can enable moral failure and the importance of being open and vulnerable within close friendships. Join us as we learn how to connect and have friendships that endure.

Bryan C. Loritts (DMin, Liberty University) is teaching pastor of the Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina. He has dedicated his life and ministry to seeing the multiethnic church become the new normal in our society. He is also vice president for regions for the Send Network, the church planting arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, where he is responsible for training church planters in multiethnic church planting. He has been a featured speaker at the Global Leadership Summit and Catalyst. His books include Insider Outsider, The Dad Difference, and The Offensive Church. His latest book is Enduring Friendship.

  • Ep. 201 Alan Briggs Returns - A Lighter Way to Live and Lead in a Heavy World
    Jul 12 2024

I have seen leaders, ministry workers, and missionaries burnout over and over. There has to be something that works. Alan Briggs says part of it is a training issue. We train for the launch, but not for longevity. In this episode, Alan discusses leadership burnout and how to cultivate healthy, sustainable habits to avoid burnout. Alan shares insights from his experience coaching leaders, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing self-care, quality time with family, boundaries, and living intentionally from one's identity rather than just doing tasks. We discuss practical strategies like limiting caffeine, daily exercise, prioritizing sleep, Sabbath, and deep work without distractions. Alan encourages leaders to look back on victories, within on progress, and ahead to priorities to gain clarity and reduce overwhelm. It’s possible to lead from who we are, develop healthy sustainable habits and avoid burnout. Join us for the anti-burnout movement.

Alan Briggs is a mountain guide for the leadership journey. Alan helps catalytic leaders leverage catalytic moments for systemic change. He does this through Leadership Coaching, Sabbatical Coaching, Working Genius training and consulting at Stay Forth. He also connects leaders in meaningful ways through a hub and ecosystem in Colorado Springs called Gather. He has one incredible wife and four incredible kids and loves finding adventures in the Rockies. His newest book, AntiBurnout, helps leaders find lightness and longevity.
