S3E133 Santa Sprint 1 Mile and 5k Banresville Ohio

  • Summary

  • Santa Sprint 1 mile and 5k Barnesville Ohio. 1 mile- 5:27:83 4th overall 5k- 19:12:81 5th overall Combine 24:40:64 4th overall Goals for both races was to be in top 5 overall to get the cool homemade awards. He gives out top 5 not just top 3. So wanted to do that which would ensure me a top 5 combined as well. Mission accomplished. I knew going in I had zero shot at winner either race. There is some really good competition out there. Which is nice because it's a challenge which is another reason why I went, to get out of the area and race some different people, which way faster then me. Also makes me strategize more going in. That's why goals were a just a top 5. Thought as long as I didn't finish below 8th in either race I had shot at top 5 combined. A couple top people only did the mile and a couple top people only did the 5k so that left open the combined if I was smart. It was cold 35° ish degrees. But dry course. There was 1st at 2pm. Makes going race nice because I can sleep in and rest up for the 2.5 hour drive. Anyway. I went put wayyyy to fast in the mile. I don't really train or race a mile so I'm horrible at it. I was below a 4:30 for the first 30 plus seconds. That destroyed me. I was burning up bad a few tenth in. Burnt back of my throat from the cold air sucking in drying it out while hot at expelled out. Managed to hang on to finish the race in 4th. Right in front of 5th. Should never have went out with the top 3 it cost me. It was rough in between races. Tried lowering heart rate and recover in the 20 mins I had in between. Sat in car drank some body armor hoping help make throat better while stopping the cough I had from the burn throat. Also tried relax legs since they were still on fire. For the 5k really didn't think I could get under 20 minutes with how I was feeling. With having gotten 4th in mile that 8th place was looking good thought about taking it easy to save myself and just play for combined instead of chasing top 5 in the 5k. But tried early on. It was a struggle. I had no juice in my legs. Had 4th locked up pretty good a mile in. No way was catching top 3. 6th amd 7th were decently enough back where I was confident. 5th was between 5 and 10 seconds behind me. When we did the hill heading out to the 2 mile area I had id say 10 seconds on 5th. Which was nice. Was not worried about 6th or 7th then afyer seeing gap at the turn around. The downhill part of the hill 5th closed gap he was flying down whereas I couldn't power myself to even engage in the free speed. About 2.3 miles in 5th was right behind me. I looked back dodnt see anyone else coming so played it smart and let 5th pass me and put me then into 5th. Didnt want to blow up or get sick from pushing to hard. Knew was riding that edge. So smart thing to do was to play position game. To me there was no difference between 4th or 5th. I'd hit my goals and not suffer as much. Though letting myself get passed put me into 4th overall combined instead of 3rd but that didn't matter much to me. Did end up finishing the 5k like 45 seconds slower than last year. I'm to out of shape right now plus burnt up to much in the mile. So it was better to play it smart then regret it. Anyway I completed all my goals and came home with some awesome hardware. Had fun. Wish I could have performed better but I'll take it with how little over trained over the past month. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onlyeyeathletics/support
