Melissa starts the episode off with a bang in our first 2(!) book recommendation to pair well with the 2014 Australian horror film The Babadook. Stepping away from horror, Kevin then suggests a book that features an old curmudgeon not unlike Carl Fredricksen in Disney Pixar's 2009 film Up. On this week's episode, Kevin and his colleague Megan explore some coming of age stories on both the silver screen and the small screen. First, Megan looks at some of her favorite 80's rom-coms including "Sixteen Candles", "Pretty in Pink", and "Can't Buy Me Love" before jumping into a novel devoted to rom-coms. Kevin then takes us back to high school with a look at the short lived tv series "Freaks and Geeks" along with a novel focusing on another group not typically represented in the protagonist role. Come along as we talk about how books can reflect life experiences and why that's worth reading about!

In this week's episode, Kevin and his colleague Scott dig into some questionable lead characters in each of their recommendations. For the first time on the pod, Scott will dive into the character of Kratos, the Spartan Ghost and lead character of the God of War video game series and see how he stacks up to another lead in a creepy carnival novel. Afterwards, Kevin will examine the flawed detective pair at the heart of season one of HBO's True Detective and compare their actions to that of another hard-boiled detective in his own series of novels. Kevin and his good friend and fellow bibliophile Meg spend some time talking about a few creepy movies and their book counterparts this episode as we get closer to the spooky season! Later, Kevin leads us through the 2019 A24 horror hit "Midsommar" and pairs it with another idyllic folk-horror story.
