  • Living In A Van Down By The River
    Nov 13 2024

As the great motivational speaker, Matt Foley, once said, "you're going to live on a steady diet of government cheese, and be living in a van down by the river". And if that sounds like you right now during the whitetail rut, then congratulations, you're doing the rut right. In today's episode, Jacob shares how he was able to gain new access to private hunting ground by doing a good deed and helping a stray dog find a new situation. Also, Jacob discusses the pressure that is on maintaining hunting as a way of life. And lastly, Jacob shares some of the gear he has in his "van" in order to live over the next week or so as he bounces from 2 different pieces of public in 2 different states.

  • Good Is The Enemy of Great
    Oct 9 2024

In today's episode, Jacob further breaks down another hunt on a hill country public land piece that has good buck and doe traffic. Why is it that deer like edge? And, where can you find edge that plays into your hunt goals and is often overlooked by other hunters? Jacob discusses the edge value of creek systems during early season and how he set up and had an encounter with a quality 4 year old buck recently. Unfortunately, details matter and that is why good is the enemy of great...failure to be meticulous with details usually translates into failure during bow season.

  • Gear That Worked & Gear That Didn't
    Sep 25 2024

In today's episode, Jacob breaks down gear that he used on his recent 10 day elk hunt out west, and shares the successes and failures of the gear he brought (boots, satellite communicator, coolers, power system, headlamps, meals, hunting pack, bugle tube, neck knife, other gear). Of course, nothing tests your gear like an out of state multi-day hunt. You end up getting to know your gear on a very nuanced level as something breaks, squeaks, or simply fails altogether. Nothing can be more frustrating than a piece of gear that doesn't perform. In fact, it can adversely impact your entire hunt. On the other hand, when you find the right piece of gear that makes your hunt easier and more efficient, it is incredibly satisfying.
