Modern but Dated

Although the length of a novel, the book feels like a long short story or novella and it is a bit more of an allegory instead of a novel. Although written in the Edwardian age, the writing is essentially modern and humorously examines the power of celebrity and the foolishness of society, even among wise individuals. This is one of the books listed on the greats of modern fiction because it was a first and ahead of its time. It still reads as modern, but. in the age of Instagram, the allegory has lost its power.

I modestly enjoyed the story, but it was much longer than necessary, and I would only recommend it to those interested in the history of modern fiction.

The narration is clear and understandable but Flo Gibson does not have a voice that lends itself to Edwardian English.

The accents and varied voices of the reader are truly horrible

This lady’s imitation of English accents hurts ones ears as does the affected lilting and false drama.
