About this listen
Maria Bamford is a creative genius. But the process of creating is not something that “comes easily” or “is enjoyable” for her. So, over the years, she’s invented a number of helpful techniques for tricking, shaming, coercing herself into doing things. You Are (A Comedy) Special is 15-step comedic send up of a self help guide that examines Maria’s approach to stand-up in a hilarious fashion. So if you’ve ever found yourself alphabetizing your cans of soup instead of, oh, writing that screenplay, you might find this book interesting. Or at least an entertaining distraction from that tough soup-alphabetizing work. YOUR ACTION - Start listening now!

Story
Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Charting a “Homeric” decades-long “odyssey” from his origins in the seedy comedy clubs of Chicago to a dramatic career full of award nominations - with a side trip into the action-man world that is baffling to all who know him - it’s almost like there are many Bob Odenkirks! But there is just one and one is plenty. Featuring humorous tangents, wild characters, and Bob’s trademark unflinching drive, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama is a classic tale told by a determined idiot.

Public speaking can be terrifying. For David Nihill, the idea of standing in front of an audience was scarier than cliff jumping into a thorny pit of spiders and mothers-in-law. Without a parachute or advanced weaponry. Something had to change.
In what doesn't sound like the best plan ever, David decided to overcome his fears by pretending to be a comedian called "Irish Dave" for one full year, crashing as many comedy clubs, festivals, and shows as possible.

Story
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Story
Breakfast of Champions (1973) provides frantic, scattershot satire and a collage of Vonnegut's obsessions. His recurring cast of characters and American landscape was perhaps the most controversial of his canon; it was felt by many at the time to be a disappointing successor to Slaughterhouse-Five, which had made Vonnegut's literary reputation.

I'm Dying Up Here chronicles the collective coming of age of the standup comedians who defined American humor during the past three decades. Born early in the Baby Boom, they grew up watching The Tonight Show, went to school during Vietnam and Watergate, migrated en masse to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, and created an artistic community unlike any before or since. They were arguably the funniest people of their generation, living in a late-night world of sex, drugs, dreams, and laughter.

In 1963, 30-year-old Friedman - who had recently quit his job as a Boston advertising executive and returned to his hometown of New York to become a theatrical producer - opened a coffee house for Broadway performers called the Improvisation. His goal? Simply to make a living, and if all went according to plan, to also make enough professional contacts to be able to mount his first Broadway show within a year's time. Later shortened to the Improv, its first West 44th Street location was in a seedy section of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen.

One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Creativity + Practice + Boundaries + Delivery
I was doing 5 minute open mic sets several times a week before Covid. I even started an open mic at a bar close by. So everything Maria was saying was stuff I could relate to. I like her idea of doing anything for an hour, calling it comedy, and practicing that daily in any environment. Maria talks about how to handle feedback. One needs to both be resilient and protect oneself. She is always enthusiastic and supportive, but she also explains creative frustration in an extremely accurate way, like a torture scientist explaining her favorite custom made tools to someone strapped to a table. She recommends having some nice friends outside of comedy and having interests outside of comedy. Mostly though she's very funny. She is at the tip top of standups. This book goes into the category of books like The Artist's Way, Big Magic, The War of Art, and Why We Make Things. (She mentions these books in the audio, but I've read them too and I agree). And I'm tacking this on at the end, but it's a good listen for anyone with anxiety and depression, even if you don't do anything creative.

I love it!
Guys. I only downloaded this selection because I have a terrible migraine and needed to find a book written for adults that wasn't full of murder. That part worked out as planned, but then Maria Bamford convinced me to write my own comedy special, which is not at all how I saw my day going. I'm pretty excited about it! So, this is a real program about writing an hour of comedy that's funny and inspirational. From experience I can say it's invalid approved. I imagine the robust would also enjoy it.

Exactly what I wanted/need...
I am not a stand-up comedian, nor an aspiring one. I am a fan of Maria Bamford...and a singer-songwriter. I often feel that comedy podcasts, etc. are directly related to any performer who tries to put a show together (a show of any kind). I decided to take a pause from my Malcolm X audible (true story) to lighten up for a drive...that book is AMAZING...and I needed to laugh (Malcolm X autobiography is short on laughs). This book delivered in every way...to the point where, somehow, with 15 minutes left or so on my first lesson, when audible for some reason started over, I just went with it...and listened to the whole thing a second time less than 24 hours later. Maria...don't change a thing.
