About this listen

From the best-selling author of the Remaining series...

They took everything - killed his wife, enslaved his daughter, destroyed his life. Now he's a man with nothing left to lose...and that's what makes him so dangerous.

Ten years after the collapse, Huxley has built a good life again. He has a loving wife, a farm with fields of golden barley, and a daughter with a strange and wonderful gift. Then the slavers come. Working out in the fields during the attack, Huxley returns too late. His daughter has been taken, and his wife is bleeding out, her last whispered words about a man with a scorpion tattoo on his neck.

Where do the slavers go? Huxley has no idea. He knows only that they head east, and so will he, setting out on foot across the desert of the Wastelands. Eighteen months into his journey, he has no hope of ever seeing his daughter alive. Dying of thirst in the open desert, he doesn't even expect to see another day.

Then a man appears out of the desert and offers Huxley water from his canteen, an unheard of kindness in these savage times. Jay is an odd man, full of violence and guided by his hatred of the slavers, but he helps Huxley survive. And he gives Huxley a new purpose: Nothing can bring back the dead, but the two men can chase down the slavers and make them bleed.

Together Huxley and Jay carve a path of destruction across the remains of a once-great land. The slavers are brutal, but they have no idea what's coming for them. Huxley has found something to live for again: blood and vengeance.

In his most powerful work yet, New York Times best-selling author D. J. Molles delivers a carefully woven novel of violence and redemption, bringing to life a devastating portrait of a man pushed to the edge of his own humanity.

Meh

The story is pretty good, has some interesting ideas and twists on a post apocalyptic world. And I get that the author was trying to depict how bleak it was for the main character, but hot damn, there were times this felt like a Max Payne game - just paragraphs about how hard life felt. I get it, say it once, but you don't need to repeat the same thing 50 times.

POST APOCALYPTIC SPAGHETTI WESTERN

What did you like best about this story?

Outstanding performance by the narrator

Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favorite?

It has to be Huxley, the central character

Any additional comments?

Outstanding narration, excellent writing - but prepare yourself for hours of gritty misery , as you are taken on a journey some 14 years after an apocalyptic " sky fire" that has reduced the USA from the 21st century to mid 1800s technology. Plenty of action, set in places like "Dry Gulch" , an army of bounty killers called the Black Hats, an economy built on slavery, and the personal journey of a wronged man set for revenge. A listener needs stamina and fortitude to accompany him on this journey, as there is a great deal of inward reflection and personal regret, and Huxley does not always make the right choices along the way. If you can leave aside the Western gunfighter theme that seems almost a parody at times, it is a book well worth listening to .. just don't expect to be lifted into a lighter mood at any point.

MORE!

We need more. I have four authors and three narrators that always hit home. This is one more to add to my favorites. Another memory!

It is okay but not great

This book was okay... Not bad but not great. I've read most of the remaining series and really enjoy christian rummels performance but this book just didn't do it for me. There was just enough of a story to keep me going and wondering how it would all end. A few good parts but mostly just kind of bland. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. It's like a decent movie that you're not mad about watching but would be fine if you never saw it again.

Gritty!

Gets you right at the start. Cuts to the chase and skips all the usual stuff and gets right to the action. Great from start to finish. Reminded me a little of Mad Max without all the cars.

What do I feel

This book needed further development before it should of been written. Wasn't DJ's best, not even close.

So much torment...at times to much.

This is a good book; Mr. Molles is an incredible talent and Christian Rummel could read from the periodic table and make it sound awesome. I won't add any spoilers, but I will say the pace is consistently upbeat, plenty of action and a great ending; however, the ongoing torment and hypocrisy of our hero was slightly irritating. Nonetheless a good read that I can recommend..

Love!

The narrator makes this read even BETTER. He gets the characters and the depths of their emotions. I can't wait for a sequel.
