About this listen

The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned and humanity has been forced to confront its own extinction. Billions have fled the glaciers, crowding out the world’s last habitable zones. They can run from the ice, but they can’t escape human nature: a cataclysmic war is coming.

In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there....

Suddenly humanity must face the possibility it is not alone in the universe. And the terrifying possibility that whatever is out there may be trying to exterminate us.

Love story with a backdrop of survival.

When this was compared to interstellar I immediately got it. I don't feel like it deserves this comparison. The love story dominates this story. Everything else is interesting but I cannot but help to roll my eyes whenever the two characters interact, which happens quite frequently.

Performance is solid. I'm about a third of the way through and cannot wait to get it over with.

The characters are not believable

The main plot between the two characters is extremely unbelievable. The “romance” is extremely prepubescent and paternalistic. The female lead is an accomplished scientist and astronaut, but for some reason her love interest controls her every move. The characters are adults but never discuss their feelings for one another like adults.

I love sci-fi, but I wish it wasn’t always written for a 14-year-old boy audience.

Oh Emma....

I wanted to like this book. I enjoyed the narrators and the premise; the Science was a bit light for SciFi but that’s okay. Action sequences were fun and the adventure was high.

That being said, this author clearly doesn’t know how to write a female character. It was so hard to groan through her chapters. An astronaut with a PhD in genetics who does...no genetics. Ever. Makes no decisions. Does what she’s told, but complains about exercise. Cries, whines and waits for rescue over and over. The only positive impact she had was on the main character’s well-being. While he is saving the world, she instead cleans and decorates the apartment obsessively and holds Sunday dinners to patch up the family. She pines for him and demands to join missions because she can’t bear to be parted from him.

I don’t know if I will read the next book because I can’t take another 10+ hours of this caricature of a woman.

Crazy range of tech. Not very believable.

it's like having a nuclear power plant in the 1800's. with that I mean Oscar who is a fully functional A.G.I Android so good as to fully deceive people for years.. The other tech in this world is similar to ours.. it

Feel Good

This would make an excellent feel good, romance, sci-fi movie. A lot of guys might find it decent, but I'm betting the ladies would like it better. Those who are scientifically aware, may not like it so much, but that's why it's Science Fiction ... just keep that in mind.

Imagination blockbuster

Here’s a book with a new angle on “End of the world themes “ Enjoyed the story even though it creates many questions. Good enough to make you want to read the sequel.

Predictable, a bit shallow, but fun

For me the key components of this book, which seemed to be used for little teases of mystery and anticipation, were more like nuggets of frustration. Where the author reveled the ‘surprises’ throughout the book left me feeling of the book moving to slow. The story had a very rough start for me, but that is about all that was negative for me in this book.

More the most part, I liked all of the characters and how they were developed. I like the general storyline, though i would not call it gripping, it was enjoyable.

Additionally I am a sucker for a few of the key components of the book. That and because I generally enjoyed the book I will pick of book two. Just not right away. Maybe when I have a lull in the books I have in my wish list.

If you choose to get the book, I hope you enjoy it.

Great Experience

Great storyline, great narration, great writing. I was immediately taken in by the two main characters. Then the story plot blew me away. Couple everything with outstanding narration and you have a great experience. in

Excellent

Really good science fiction story. It really stretches the imagination. Narration is wonderfully done. I’m really becoming a fan of both AG Riddle and Edoardo Ballerini
