About this listen

Part of John Muir's appeal to modern audiences is that he not only explored the American West and wrote about its beauties but also fought for their preservation. His successes dot the landscape and are evident in all the natural features that bear his name: forests, lakes, trails, and glaciers. Here collected are some of Muir's finest wilderness essays, ranging in subject matter from Alaska to Yellowstone, from Oregon to the High Sierra.

Now I want to go to all the places! Very much enjoyed listening to this.

Good narrator and excellent selection of writings

A beautiful description of the northwest part of our country and Alaska. It is sad because so much of what Muir describes is no longer visible. The unbelievable sights in Alaska are especially missed, and soon there may be even more lost to mining(Pebble), poor logging conservation, and to climate change.
This is a wonderful book to drift off to sleep with.

Beautiful and sad

The essays are inspiring and worthy. The narrator is just ok, could use more inflection with the speed he reads at.

Amazing essays

Great imagery! I just wish I had been there so I could have a better grasp of the concepts and verbiage he uses.

Amazing writer

The beautiful descriptions of the plants, animals and landscapes he encountered. And his attribution of all this wonder to God.

Muir’s passion for the wild.

I just recently returned from a national park excursion and I had hear what Muir says about them. I love the way he describes the trees and glaciers. He makes me feel as if I'm there again.

Love Muir's description of wild

This was exactly what I was hoping for. Muir was as much of a poet as he was an avid outdoorsman and explorer. His love for the natural work truly comes to life thru these short stories. The Scottish narration helps you feel as tho you’re listening to John himself. An absolute must read/listen for everyone.

Yes!!

Writing is often beautiful and provided an astonishingly detailed catalogue of the natural world but there is much less philosophical depth than someone like Thoreau. With occasional exceptions, Muir writes like a literary salesmen for America's natural monuments

Beautiful writing, but fairly shallow narrative

Superb narration! Listening to Muir's essays read by someone with a Scottish accent was wonderful. His descriptions are both informative and relaxing. He lived the life!

Like listening to Muir himself!
