About this listen

Why would a loving and powerful God allow so much pain and suffering? In Why Suffering? Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale carefully walk you through a variety of responses that considered together provide a clear, comprehensive, and convincing answer. Responses like:

  • Where there is the possibility of love, there has to be the reality of freedom, and therefore the possibility of pain.
  • Wishing God had made a different world is to wish yourself out of existence.
  • The cross is the key to a compelling and rational explanation for trusting in God in the face of suffering.
  • In comparison with other world religions, the Christian response is highly distinctive.
  • The reality of evil only makes sense in light of the reality of divine goodness.
  • Relational knowledge about God takes the argument beyond reason to the presence of God amidst suffering.
  • God's decision to allow temporal suffering is understandable when viewed from an eternal perspective.
  • Divine goodness shows how to conquer not in spite of, but even through suffering.

Here is a book written with great respect for the complexity of the issue, recognizing that some who read it will be in the trenches of deep suffering themselves and others questioning the very existence of a loving God. Why Suffering? provides an answer to the problem of pain and suffering with emotional sensitivity and intellectual integrity.

There are many discussions of suffering out there, but I have yet to find a book that fully satisfies the aching “why?” questions that arise in the midst of suffering. And this, I think, is because intellectual answers are incapable of completely soothing our pain. However, it is in asking these questions - honestly and openly - that we begin the journey toward healing. When we ask “Why?” in the presence of a loving God and loving friends or family, our suffering is diminished even if the “answer” is hidden from view. In this book, Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale fearlessly ask the tough questions that human hearts have in the face of heartache, loss, and suffering. Their questions, as well as their discoveries, enhance and compliment one another because their stories are distinctly unique. Zacharias and Vitale honor the reader by refusing to give pat answers. Instead, they are like two lenses in a pair of glasses, each working with the other to offer a clear view of the confusion and pain that suffering causes. In doing so, they also speak together as two voices giving one witness to the hope and healing that comes as we encounter God in the midst of our questions and our pain.

Two voices of hope

I loved this book - coming from a background of child abuse - tragedies & poor health in adulthood & now dealing with my husband’s cancer diagnosis - the recking ball of cancer shattering our lives this book on suffering & pain was so important to my life. I got a a lot of peace the first time I listed to the book & even more the second time. I highly recommend this book to all who live on this planet especially those facing painful circumstances

I listened to this book Twice & will listen again ...

What made the experience of listening to Why Suffering? the most enjoyable?

It gives you a greater understanding of the value of suffering and why a loving God would allow it to remain. It also discusses the problem we have if all suffering is wiped away. What would we learn then? What could we learn if everything is perfect?

Who was your favorite character and why?

There were no "characters" in this book, this is a question that obviously does not apply to this book as it WAS NOT a Novel! Keep these kinds of questions to those books.

What does Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

They made it personal to them. You could hear their love and passion as they read.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?
