About this listen

In this second audiobook of the Shetland Quartet to feature Inspector Jimmy Perez, the launch of an exhibition at The Herring House art gallery is disturbed by a stranger who bursts into tears, then claims not to remember who he is or where he comes from. The next day he's found dead, wearing a clown's mask. Set in mid-summer, the audiobook captures the unsettling nature of a landscape where the sun never quite sets and where people are not as they first seem.

I've read five Shetland novels and this was the best. I read them out of order but felt this was the most satisfying. The close atmosphere between jimmy and the islanders pervaded the story. The mystery is a bit unfair as facts unknown to the reader emerge at the end of the narrative to solve the "crimes". But it is enjoyable never-the-less. Mike

Ann Cleeves character Jimmy Perez is great. He can seem so human and caring and not like you think a policeman or detective would be.

Ann did it again!

I wouldn't call this a thriller at all--it's more a slow consideration of the central question--whodunit. If you like small-town murder mysteries that take plenty of time to develop the characters and the setting, this might be for you. It's well-written and offers characters that are easy to care about. The narration is excellent. I loved the first book in the series, but this one didn't hold my attention quite as much.

I’m rereading White Nights over as I’d mixed up the order. Makes more sense now. Love the character development. Great series!

Thought I wouldn’t like this book because I watched the movie series but it was different enough to make it really special

The dramatic setting in Shetland is as strong a character as the people are in this engrossing thriller.

Captivating mystery

This beautifully strange world of characters just this side of cliche, but far enough to this side to be believable and interesting and unpredictable. Could be any place really...once you open the doors and look inside the secret lives of the inhabitants.

Picked up where last one left off...
