About this listen

The serial killer he couldn’t catch is dead....

Can DI Rob Marshall save his last victim before she dies too?

Met cop DI Rob Marshall is hot on the trail of the serial killer known as the Chameleon, who has abducted, tortured, and killed a series of young women in Northwest London. As they close in, the Chameleon—who switches identity to get close to his victims—shoots Marshall’s partner and escapes.

But when the Chameleon’s body is found two years later, Marshall must return to his home town of Melrose in the Scottish Borders and face the tragedy that’s haunted him for 20 years and made him leave in the first place.

The Chameleon’s final victim is still missing–can Marshall unpick the Chameleon’s latest identity in time to save her from a lonely death?

The Turning of Our Bones is the first book in the DI Rob Marshall series, starring a haunted detective who masks his trauma with biting humour. Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride, JD Kirk, and LJ Ross.

Excellent narration

The narrator is excellent. He did the best he could with a convoluted story. It even he could make me care for this whining main character.

It Had Its Moments But...

Like other reviewers, I think the story would have benefited greatly from a good editing. It had a lot of promise but I found myself saying: "Whaaattt???" and "Where the heck did that come from???" more than a few times. There were a lot of inconsistencies in the story; I.e. Something stated in one chapter was forgotten or contradicted a few chapters later. Rob comes off whiney, a bit over the top and not leveled or logical at times. I plowed through because Angus King was narrating and he rocks and did his best with what he had. I'm going to move on to the next book in the series, hoping it's an improvement.

an interesting premise on Scotland

The performance of Agus King was outstanding. It's always nice to find a good series that has potential. I think the author's trying to struggle with writing police procedurals with the contemporary twist to them. I would hope he would get some advice from some current Scottish police people on what actually goes down in an investigation. I'm a little disappointed in trying to contrive some conflict between the characters using modern concepts like bullying, sexism racism as issues, people have to remember that Scotland is only really less than 5% diverse. With 1% of the police department being diverse... It is interesting to note that the prison incarcerations reflect the percentage of the population in terms of diversity with about 4% being minority. I think with the way the laws in Scotland are structured now that kind of stuff may happen but not as much as the author is making, nor without recourse. The actual story was good The intertwining of the small town lives of the people who make up Scotland and a serial killer are interesting. I look forward to presentation of the second audiobook.

Angus King is superb

The story was a bit difficult to follow at the beginning; and having the specific narrator makes it worth the listen.

Great Story Line & Characters

This is the second series I've listened to (after DI Fenchurch Thrillers ) by Ed James and I like that this is not the end of the story. I appreciate that I am able to carry over the continuity to the next books in the series. I hope there will be more books added to this series as the characters are developing more levels in each book. I've listened to Books 0.5 & 1 and am starting Book 2 today. Thank you for these treasures!
Oh, and I've always enjoyed the narrations by Angus King.
Also a long time fan of series by LJ Ross & JD Kirk

Enjoyed it!

Love this narrator! The storyline was good, I like the main character, but the telling of the story reminded me of some American style police procedurals. If it wasn't for the awesome narrator, it could have taken place in the US. Nevertheless, I'm going to purchase the next book in the series, and perhaps the author will improve his writing style with more practice.

Completely boggled

I have listened to a lot of audiobooks, but this has to be one of the ones that had more twists, and turns that I ever saw come and it was only until the last two chapters that I finally had an inkling of who was the killer. That being said, I will look forward to some more. Etta James novels did Reid and Love Angus King.

Thank goodness for Angus!

If it wasn’t for the great narration I wouldn’t have been able to finish this book. The plot had promise but the characters are all so unlikeable and the storyline stretched out unnecessarily.
