About this listen

Where's the Next Shelter? is the true story of three travelers on the Appalachian Trail, a 2,000-mile hike that stretches from Georgia to Maine, told from the perspective of Gary Sizer, a seasoned backpacker and former marine who quickly finds himself humbled by the endeavor. He teams up with Megan, a sassy college grad whose indomitable spirit eclipses her lack of experience; and Lemmy, a cartoonist from overseas whose off-kilter commentary on the wonders and frustrations of the trail keeps everyone laughing.

Sprawling through the woods and towns of the Appalachian Mountains, the trail carries the trio through real and fanciful ups and downs ranging from hilarious to perilous. Much more than an orderly account of mountaintops and meals, this book is an adventure about friends figuring things out as they go. It's about screwups and solutions, awe and inspiration.

If you long for the horizon or to sleep under the stars, then come along for the hike of a lifetime. All you have to do is take the first step.

Really enjoyable read (listen).

I really enjoyed this book. The essence of the story will be familiar to those who have read many AT chronicles but the style was a little different. It was as entertaining as Walk In the Woods but more real and true to the thru hiker experience. It was as factual and experiential as AWOL but lighter-hearted and less philosophical. It wasn't quite as gritty as Becomjng Odyssa but this was no easy experience and nearly as uplifting. I really enjoyed each of these books and this one is right up there with them. The fact that the author lived it, wrote it and narrated it was a plus. He was a bit quick on the read though. I listened at .75 speed. Enjoy -

Surprise

When I first notice the narrator and author was the same I was hesitant. The first chapter or two I had to insure no one was around due to language. However once I caught the flow I couldn’t stop listening.

Pops from the PCT

I am a long distance hiker and while listening to this book I was lifted from the city and carried back to the trail. Thanks Gary.

Enjoyable.

I love reading, or in this case listening to these books on the AT.
The story was interesting, and entertaining. However, for some reason the writer deem it necessary to use at times a certain amount of foul language. I guess he felt, and others like him believe, they can't sell books unless they do. They are wrong. Other than this it really was a good story, and money well spent!

Even my wife enjoyed listening.

Good adventure story by the common man vs the professional adventurer. I may be biased because I this is my type of book but it fulfilled its mission.

How could he be so stupid

I'm loving this book but I knew the second he described his first symptom what was wrong with his feet and I'm not even a hiker. I won't spoil it by saying what it was in case you don't know. SMH
