Love this series!!

I have loved all of these books! I wasn't crazy about the narrator at first but now I can't here the Characters in anybody else's voice... Porter has made them hers. My only complaint is the increasing sense of panic that rises with each completed book... I'm not ready for them to end! ......

.......(don't think this qualifies as a spoiler but don't read ahead if you don't want to risk it ;) ...

I have never like Kat... so I am very happy with the way this book ended! Hero is a much better match for him!

Pleasant Surprise

Any additional comments?

This was the first of these I read/listened to. I immediately bought the next two in the series. I love historical fiction - when it's good. But there is A LOT of it out there, and, well - I send more back than I keep on with. So I was rather leery of this, afraid it might be Georgette Heyer meets Midsommer Murders. Not so. First, the feel and depiction of London in the early 19th century is very, very good. Akin to David Liss or the Sharpe novels, which this reminded me of, even if it isn't actually about the Peninsula Campaign. It's a fascinating time politically and socially, and the author catches it really well. The main character somehow - not quite sure how, but mercifully - manages to avoid being a cliche. As do most of the rest. These books are intelligent, and compelling. There's a bit more Romantic Bodice Ripper overtone than I care for, but that's personal taste, and it's not overdone. The plots are solid, the setting convincing and the characters compelling. Good narration, too.

Yet another excelle performance by Davina Porter!

Captivating story! Well written and flawlessly performed! Anyone can read a book, but it takes a master performer to act it out in voices and accents!!

Mystery with a little romance

I love this series. It combines great plot lines and mysteries that keep you guessing with some wonderful characters that I have grown quite attached to. Sebastian St. Cyr, the lead man, not only solves murder mysteries, but has many of his own mysteries to untangle in his own life. The characters have taken on a life of their own and I can't wait for the next installment in the series. The narrator has a wonderful English accent that blends well with the storyline and characters as well. Highly recommend - but try to read the first books in the series prior to this one.

Excellent

I am not the first person to express the greatness of this series, so I won't go on about the excellent research and wonderful writing. I love mysteries and really enjoy when the killer is not obvious. This series is a true mystery to the very end.
The character development is exceptional. The characters have flaws that make them human and not paragons, which is how most humans behave.
I think sometimes that Sebastian is more on the superhero side as he seems to have a Wolverine like healing ability, as well as the ability to fight after extreme blood loss! I think I have started to like the way he kills the enemy and moved on, not looking back to see what happens to the body...wow.
Every book in the series gets better and as a reader I change back and forth about how I feel about a character. This is good as it keeps me thinking and engaged.
There is only one aspect which is bothering me. The Sebastian/Kat relationship. I wish it was not written as if it was the greatest love ever experienced. It makes me sad about Hero. I understand love can grow, but it is difficult to move through this part of the story without sadness at the loss of true love. In a world of great loss, to read about their loss of a future together is a little depressing. The author could not know what would happen in today's world that increases this sadness. The relationship has such a fantasy like quality, I have doubts whether there is any "getting over it" and that it will remain in the background of Hero's marriage.
I love the narrater..another loss. Listening to her move from character to character , giving each a different nuance is a pleasure. She is irreplaceable.
This is one of the best series I have read. After I finish one I think it is one less in the series and sigh.
