About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Deborah Crombie pens suspenseful English mysteries that have drawn favorable comparisons to the best of P. D. James and Ruth Rendell. Her novel Dreaming of the Bones made the Independent Mystery Booksellers of America’s list of the 100 Best Crime Novels of the 20th Century.

This time, Scotland Yard’s Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James delve into a mystery brewing since World War II.

History again infuses a contemporary narrative

Crombie’s crime novels blend modern life (with its ups and downs) with other eras in a way that connects the reader or listener with a humanistic blend of values, thoughts, challenges and human frailty. Nuanced and brilliantly crafted fiction that will satisfy sophisticated crime fiction (e.g. Peter Grainger) fans and also expose them to vivid glimpses of history.

Love the book, can’t stand the performance

I get distracted by the overdone performance. It’s like each word is over-read and it sounds like how a children’s librarian reads a fairytale. The emotion doesn’t always match the story or the person speaking. I like the male narrator she uses on some books much better.

Lovely reads

These characters have become my friends. The story is fast paced and keeps the pages turning. I do hope to finish the series. Highly recommend!

My favorite Deborah Crombie book so far!

Would you consider the audio edition of Where Memories Lie to be better than the print version?

The narrator brings so much life into the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Where Memories Lie?

The climax, when Jemma realized who did it.

What does Jenny Sterlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Because of her rang, she is able to create different voices which helped me picture the different characters. And I suspect she knows how to pronounce words, since she's English, that I don't, because I'm American.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Evil casts a long shadow.

Any additional comments?

I'm going to read or listen (or both) all of Deborah Crombie's books.

One of the best

I have enjoyed getting to know Duncan and Gemma in earlier books, but so far I like this one best.

Excellent plot!

Enjoyed very much, well written with twists and turns. My favorite accent was Erika…I’m sure it was because she had a delightful German accent and reminded me of my late mother! Love the Gemma stories!!

Going once, going twice…Sold!

This book was a “page turner”, I love Deborah brings previously met characters back into the mix. I love the progression of their (Duncan & Gemma’s) busy little family fur babies & all. This was a great and interesting story but, again missing the narration of Michael Deehy… I guess I’ll have to get over it as he doesn’t appear to be narrating any more books in the rest of the series.

Twists and turns

Love this series of books. Especially the continuing story of Duncan and Gemma. I’ve watched Midsommer Murders and Morse and Inspector Lewis - similar stories - and wish they’d make a TV show based on these.
