About this listen

In Japanese-occupied Malaya, lives are shattered and a woman discovers her inner strength in a world ravaged by war.

Following the death of their matriarch, the lives of Chye Hoon's family are turned upside down. Now that the British have fled and the Japanese have conquered, their once-benign world changes overnight.

Amid the turmoil, Chye Hoon's daughter-in-law, Mei Foong, must fend for her family as her husband, Weng Yu, becomes increasingly embittered. Challenged in ways she never could have imagined and forced into hiding, Mei Foong finds a deep reservoir of resilience she did not know she had and soon draws the attentions of another man.

Is Mei Foong's resolve enough to save herself, her marriage, and her family? Only when peace returns to Malaya will she learn the full price she must pay for survival.

The futre

I have thoroughly enjoyed this and the previous book in this series, hoping there is or will be a third.

Very nice

This book really flowed well. Although i did struggle at first remembering the characters from the previous book, they quickly came together. Although the ending was a bit of a shocker, I hope Selina Siak Chin Yoke writes this as a trilogy.

I do not know what to say

This is my first book in the Malayan series. I can not say I got bore with the book, but sometimes did not feel that they were in a war. That It was a love story, between who?A women in every chapter has a kid and when her husband order her to live the house, she did not fight, she just lived, the older kids was 11 and the young kid was 3. Difficult for me to accept, and easy for her to do and started a new life. Well.........

Great

The book was touching and moving but just need more. I hate the ending but it comes to show a woman’s will and how sometimes we can be silenced and yet how powerful we can be you can see that in the mother-in-law.

Rich Sweep Sweep of History & Culture

Great story, though I did enjoy the 1st novel more. This one seemed to end very abruptly. The characters are good and the historical plot line well-researched, but the greatest attribute is the sense of place and culture.
