Jamison Hill
About this listen
A memoir of a healthy young man who survives a fatal car crash only to be plagued by a mysterious illness that robs him of the ability to walk, talk, and eat solid food. When Force Meets Fate is a captivating, transcendent survival story that forces all of us to reckon with our mortality and the fragility of life.
At age 22, Jamison Hill was a fitness instructor who could lift more than 400 pounds. Five years later, after surviving a tragic car accident that killed the other driver, a rare disease left Jamison bedridden and too weak to hold a water glass. He spent every day lying motionless in bed, his body paralyzed by pain and fatigue, his mind hijacked by flashes of crunched metal, broken windshields, and exploding gas tanks.
After months of not being able to speak or eat, Jamison's health finally improved and he began to tell his story. When Force Meets Fate is an unflinching exploration of the human condition, notably how our strengths and limitations shape our identities and how unexpected events can inevitably alter our perceptions.
It's a story of perseverance - of sheer will and unrelenting fight - but also of overcoming life's toughest challenges through the power of vulnerability and how freeing it can be to surrender to the unpredictability of circumstances out of our control.

Story
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

Tessa was born with a gift. Through a simple touch she picks up pieces of others. A flash of color devours her - the only indication that she’s gained something new from another person. Red equals pain; purple, a talent; yellow, a premonition; orange, a painful memory; and blue, a pleasant one. Each flash blurs the lines between her inherent traits and those she’s acquired from others. Whenever she gains bits of something new, she loses more pieces of herself.

Miriam and Craig are both artists and their four children carry on the legacy. When their teenage son, Nick, is diagnosed with schizophrenia, a tumultuous decade ensues in which the family careens off the conventional course. Like the 10 Biblical plagues, they are hit by one catastrophe after another: violence, evictions, arrests, a suicide attempt, a near-drowning - even cancer and a brain tumor - play against the backdrop of a wild teenage bacchanal.

Story
In an idyllic Los Angeles neighborhood, where generations enjoy deep roots in old homes, the O’Rourke family fits right in.

His new and initially intimidating classmates were high achievers from the Ivy League and other elite universities. Faculty raved about the group as though the residency program had won the lottery, nicknaming them “The Golden Class”, but would Stern ever prove that he belonged? In his memoir, Stern pulls back the curtain on the intense and emotionally challenging lessons he and his fellow doctors learned.

Heart wrenching!
Wow! This is a heartbreaker on so many levels. I felt like I was there through the authors struggles and while I have never walked in his shoes I certainly felt as if I tried them on by reading the book and now listening to the audio version. I hope he keeps finding the strength to keep going and to keep writing. What an inspiration!

Amazing presentation of a true life story!
This book tells the story of a vibrant young man dealing with PTSD and the onset of a debilitating illness and it's effect on his life for some years. Many people worldwide are struggling at this time to diagnose and find help for chronic pain and chronic fatigue. It's an extremely difficult and expensive journey. Jamison Hill does a wonderful job of describing the effort in an intimate and engaging way. In spite of its painful subject, the book is remarkably inspiring and a pleasure to read.

Listened from start to finish.
I was surprised at how captivated I was by this all too real story of a man and his nemesis. I highly recommend this audiobook. The story and narration were clear, well-done, and easy to listen to. It's one of those books I will listen to again in the future.

Not helpful
This could have been a helpful book for those suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis, instead it comes across more as bemoaning his lack of sex life. The few nuggets of helpful information aren’t worth the listen
