Acerca de esta escucha
A heart-wrenching yet hopeful memoir of a young marriage that is redefined by mental illness and affirms the power of love.
Mark and Giulia's life together began as a storybook romance. They fell in love at 18, married at 24, and were living their dream life in San Francisco. When Giulia was 27, she suffered a terrifying and unexpected psychotic break that landed her in the psych ward for nearly a month. One day she was vibrant and well adjusted; the next she was delusional and suicidal, convinced that her loved ones were not safe.
Eventually Giulia fully recovered, and the couple had a son. But soon after Jonas was born, Giulia had another breakdown, and then a third a few years after that. Pushed to the edge of the abyss, everything the couple had once taken for granted was upended.
A story of the fragility of the mind and the tenacity of the human spirit, My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward is, above all, a love story that raises profound questions: How do we care for the people we love? What and whom do we live for? Breathtaking in its candor, radiant with compassion, and written with dazzling lyricism, Lukach's is an intensely personal odyssey through the harrowing years of his wife's mental illness, anchored by an abiding devotion to family that will affirm listeners' faith in the power of love.

On the outside, Terri Cheney was a highly successful, attractive Beverly Hills entertainment lawyer. But behind her seemingly flawless facade lay a dangerous secret - for the better part of her life, Cheney had been battling debilitating bipolar disorder and concealing a pharmacy's worth of prescriptions meant to stabilize her moods and make her "normal". In bursts of prose that mirror the devastating highs and extreme lows of her illness, Cheney describes her roller-coaster life with shocking honesty.

Moving, harrowing, and ultimately uplifting, Lori Schiller's memoir is a classic testimony to the ravages of mental illness and the power of perseverance and courage. At 17, Lori Schiller was the perfect child - the only daughter of an affluent, close-knit family. Six years later she made her first suicide attempt, then wandered the streets of New York City dressed in ragged clothes, tormenting voices crying out in her mind. Alice Carrière tells the story of her unconventional upbringing in Greenwich Village as the daughter of a remote mother, the renowned artist Jennifer Bartlett, and a charismatic father, European actor Mathieu Carrière. From an early age, Alice is forced to navigate her mother’s recovered memories of ritualized sexual abuse, which she turns into art, and her father’s confusing attentions—her childhood is spent in an adult’s world, with little-to-no boundaries or supervision.

New York Times-best-selling author Ron Powers offers a searching, richly researched narrative of the social history of mental illness in America paired with the deeply personal story of his two sons' battles with schizophrenia. From the centuries of torture of "lunatiks" at Bedlam Asylum to the infamous eugenics era to the follies of the anti-psychiatry movement to the current landscape in which too many families struggle alone to manage afflicted love ones, Powers limns our fears and myths about mental illness and the fractured public policies that have resulted.

Historia
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

When 24-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory of how she’d gotten there. Days earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: At the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. Now she was labeled violent, psychotic, a flight risk. What happened?

Whether they were spending summer days on the shores of Lake Michigan, barreling down the ski slopes, or navigating the trials of their Catholic school, the Kissingers always knew how to live large and play hard. Historia
Julia Fox Garrison refused to listen to the professionals she called Dr. Jerk and Dr. Panic, who - after she suffered a massive, debilitating stroke at age thirty-seven - told her she’d probably die, or to Nurse Doom, who ignored her emergency call button. Instead she heeded the advice of kind, gifted Dr. Neuro, who promised her he would “treat your mind as well as your body.” Julia figured if she could somehow manage to get herself into a wheelchair, at least she’d always find parking. But after many, many months of hospitalization and rehab, Julia not only got into a wheelchair, but she got back out.

Beautiful, raw & honest peak into mental illness
Where does My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I loved this book. It was a beautiful, raw & honest peak into mental illness. I liked that it was from the caregivers perspective. Other books I've read are from the individual's perspective. I too struggle from bipolar, and I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in it. It's not a walk in the park, but people who suffer with this mental illness are worth fighting for and giving a voice to. Bipolar can't be cured, but it can be managed to allow the individual to live a relatively normal life.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mark, the husband. He stayed true to his wedding vows and stayed with his wife through thick and thin.
Which scene was your favorite?
Oddly enough, I liked the scene when she quit going off her medication. It shows how important it is to stay on your medication even if you feel like you're okay without it. A diabetic wouldn't stop taking insulin and expect to be fine, and the same holds true with mental illness. There's no shame in being on medication to help you keep your life on track. It's not your fault your chemicals and hormones are out of balance. I think it's largely due to genetics.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I definitely cried in parts. It struck close to home many times.
Any additional comments?
I would hope anyone who reads this that does not suffer or does not have a loved one who suffers from mental illness would gain some empathy toward people who do.

Inspiration
Honest and raw emotions , heartfelt and inspiring. After my almost 30 year marriage fell apart after I broke my back , going through surgeries, depression , suicidal thoughts our marriage began to fall apart. I fought for 2 years to get our life back on track , not just for us but our 4 teenaged children but my husband at the time did not share in this need to repair the damage and divorce soon followed. After hearing this memoir gives me a renewed faith that there are men out there that do stick by their spouse/family through the good times and the worst of times. After seeing so many divorces throughout my life I begin to wonder if true love that lasted into old age like that of my grandparents was a thing of the past but no it isnt ! Thank you so much for sharing your story with the world.

Honest and Forthcoming
Mark has written an honest and forthcoming memoir about his experience of his wife’s developing mental health disease, our mental health system, and the positive and negative ways he and his family coped and managed. Hearing his and Giulia‘s individual growth stories and their growth as a couple reminds me that we’re all doing the best we can even if we still have a long way to go. My heart cheered watching them slowly become a team and develop a plan and then execute it with much more positive results both from a disease management perspective and a relational health perspective. Thank you Mark and Giulia and extended family for allowing the world an honest peek behind the curtain.

touched me so much
This book really tugged on my heart . It was so honest and raw. I felt myself relate as a person who struggled with depression. I also related on a basic human level. At times I felt angry at Julia and sorry for Mark. I realize that this is the problem. We do not put enough understanding into mental health. I am sure that if there was anyway that she could have controlled her psychotic episodes then she would have. what a great book. now I need to make up the sleep for the two nights that I lost from not being able to put this book down.

Mental Illness Crashes into the Champagne Room
I was hesitant to purchase this Audiobook because I knew I would piece apart the details as a mental health professional that has worked in a Psychiatric Hospital. No social worker can prescribe meds so 15 minutes into listening I was done...then kept going. This biopic describes the mental health system at best with a close psychotic family member. Caviar treatment in a world that is riddled with the poor.

Incredibly annoying narrator.
The story is so incredibly powerful. Absolutely moving. However the narrator is utterly atrocious. Awful snooty voice he makes for the wife and poor Jonas. His voice wasn't much better. I guess the dog would have sounded like scooby doo.

Perspective is great
The way he tells the story is great.
As someone that deals with my own mental health issues- this offered a great but very obvious perspective. I think I waited for something different at the end.
He literally is just telling the STORY of his perspective as the husband to someone with what sometimes turns into a debilitating mental health diagnosis, and being a father to their son.
History is probably exactly like millions of other stories. In fact, I know that it is.
There isn’t anything remarkable to the story. There were times where I was scared to listen because it really embarks on how unrelenting and unpredictable mental health episodes can be.
It’s just 1 foot in front of the other. Towards the middle of the bucket left me longing for the perspective of the sick wife.
She must have felt like a burden. How it must’ve felt from the mother’s perspective.
I commend him for staying with his wife IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH as he did.
Most of us do not have that “ending”

A supportive husband -- the best!
As a psychotherapist, I not only appreciated this book but appreciated demonstrating how a supportive family can make the difference in the recovery of a mentally ill loved one. I felt the performance of the audible made the memoir come alive .....an excellent job!
