Publisher's summary

What we were...

Sean found love once, with his college roommate, Trevor, and Trevor’s best friend, Charlotte. The missing piece, Sean made it possible for Trevor and Charlotte to find love too. But then Sean left and took the love with him.

What we are...

Now an FBI agent, Sean is back in town, 10 years later, to investigate a murder. A case that pits him against his ex-lovers - Charlotte, a local detective, and Trevor, a literature professor sucked into the Shakespearean mystery. Everyone guards their hearts, but before long, desire sparks anew the feelings that burned hot a decade ago. That still burn true.

What we may be...

Love is within their grasp again, but as the killer escalates, it’s more than just their hearts and futures on the line. Sean, Charlotte, and Trevor will need to work together to solve the case. If they can’t, lives will be lost and pieces of their love gone for good.

What We May Be is a gripping stand-alone romantic mystery, featuring a literary whodunit and three former flames finding their way back to friendship, love, and happily ever after together.

Enjoyable

The narration and story were both enjoyable.
I thought I had figured out who was responsible for the killings but I was wrong.
I felt I got just enough of our trios backstory throughout the book. I was happy when a lot of their secrets were revealed.
After the killer is caught, we jump 6 months into the future. This is where I feel a little cheated. Would have loved to have seen their ceremony and get the status of an family member that was losing a battle with cancer.

Enjoyed!

What We May Be is a terrific second chance romance/mystery.
It was so interesting to see these three navigate their romance while also being caught up in the murder/mysteries taking place in their town.
Charlie, Sean, and Trevor have a past with a lot of history. Meeting up again after ten years can they finally all be in the right place at the right time?
There is plenty of heat, heartbreak, love and so much more!
What a treat. Christian Leatherman does a terrific job of bringing this story to life.

Hot Menage with a Great Story!

If this cover isn't enough to make you dig in, the story will be! I love a good MMF story, but one that is more than the stuff between the sheets is hard to find and this story delivers!

Sean, Trevor and Charlotte lost their happiness 10 years ago and now that Sean is back in the middle of a big homicide case, things start to heat up for the trio.

This story has a lot of feelings between these three people who loved each other and weren't able to move on from each other. Sean coming back to town gives them the closure that they have needed.

The suspense in here is well written and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a great listen! The narrator did a great job with the story and kept me engaged.

Loved it

Omg, this book was so good! Erotic love story, meets law and order, meets authentic NC coastal charm. I even love that the narrator had an authentic NC southern accent instead of a generic overly exaggerated southern accent. The murder mystery part was great with the plot twist and who did it and why. No spoilers here. But the book was amazing. This author is on my need to read list. And if you don’t know about Cheerwine and good BBQ you will and you will want some. Loved it!!! I need more of their story. So much background. Is there a prequel? If not there should be.

Twists and turns and triad romance

The story was a great mix of sexual tension, mystery and suspense. Well written, realistic police procedures. The narrator has a pleasant voice but all sorts of weird inflections and pauses during sentences that emphasize words that sound odd. I had to mentally go back and picture the sentence written to figure out what it meant sometimes because his inflection changed the meaning of the sentence and/or the pause was not somewhere a comma would be.

better than a menage or rh

For as intense and suspenseful as this was, it was equally entertaining and some humor between the three mains. Trying to get revenge for someone who doesn't want or need it!! Slippery psycho slope, though I agreed with several of the revenge choices. No one is entitled to be a vigilante. I admired the dynamics between the three. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing the characters and story to life.

Intriguing tale w/ promising narrator--4.5 stars!

What do you do when one of your favorite go-to authors has a new audiobook and it has a trope that you're usually wary about? Add to that the narrator, who is absolutely new to me? Welp, this IS Layla Reyne we're talking about here as far as the author goes, and that alone was enough for me to dive into her latest romantic suspense novel. While throuples usually give me pause, I dive in when the story is penned by an author whose work I'm familiar with. My main hesitation with throuples is that I need to believe that all three individuals are on equal footing and not one couple being more into each other and the third more like the understudy to one or both of the main actors. But Reyne made me believe that Sean loved Charlie as much as he loved Trevor, and Trevor loved Sean as much as he loved Charlie, and Charlie loved Trevor as much as she loved Sean. Their romance was as intense as the mystery of who was behind the killings. Figuring out who the villain was and what their motive was added to the awesomeness of this story.

Now, with regards to Christian Leatherman, who narrates this complex and intriguing tale with second-chance and romantic suspense feels, I must confess that I was very much impressed with his performance! I'm not a hundred percent sure how prolific Leatherman's narration profile is, but if I based it on the quick search I did here on Audible which produced two results including this current title, he's off to a good start. Yes, there were a couple of times where I had to pause and rewind a wee bit to figure out which character was speaking, but other than that, Leatherman did what I considered to be a highly commendable job in giving voice to the characters and maintaining that tense feel throughout the story. I certainly wouldn't mind listening to more from him in the future.

So, 4.5 stars for the story from Layla Reyne and 4.5 stars for the performance from Christian Leatherman, which averages out to an overall rating of 4.5 stars for What We May Be.

The price of secrets

This was a fairly good mystery with a side of second chance romance x3. Loosely united by the theme of Shakespeare’s four tragedies, the mystery involved a series of murders and kept me guessing (incorrectly) until the end. I enjoyed how each event both opened and closed off avenues of investigation and required a lot of collaboration between many characters to pursue. I felt the romance aspect of it was less well done however and was hindered by my biggest pet peeve in a relationship - persistent lack of communication, as Sean, Trevor, and Charlie kept their secrets close. I’m not sure I agree with how everything was resolved, but overall I still liked the story. Christian Leatherman is a new to me narrator and while his voice is pleasant enough, the lack of distinction in the voices made it difficult many times to know which character was speaking. I imagine he’ll improve at that with more experience.

Good Second Chance

This is a good second chance. I like that the reunion wasn't overly drawn out and the overall story line was intriguing and did throw a little twist in there. I enjoyed this listen and Leatherman made it that much better with the narration.
