Acerca de esta escucha

‘Witty, funny, warm and wise’ Marian Keyes

Is it a break? Or is it a blip?

‘You’ve just had a holiday,’ I pointed out, trying not to yawn. ‘Wasn’t that enough of a break?’
‘I don’t mean that kind of break.’

There’s nothing worse than the last day of holiday. Oh wait, there is. When what should have been a proposal turns into a break, Liv and Adam find themselves on opposite sides of the life they had mapped out.

Friends and family all think they’re crazy; Liv throws herself into work – animals are so much simpler than humans – and Adam tries to get himself out of the hole he’s dug.

But as the short break becomes a chasm, can they find a way back to each other? Most importantly, do they want to?

Lindsey Kelk stories tend to give me anxiety throughout with the lack of communication her character’s refuse to acknowledge. That being said, it’s funny. The scenes with David always crack me up. Gotta love a work husband! I would have liked a bit more character development for the two leads on why they, SPOILER ALERT, couldn’t handle a big fight and then go off to be validated by other people. It felt really hard for me to root for them. Especially Adam with his client Jane. The story would have been more interesting if each of them explored the people they had crushes on and figured out that despite their “on paper” appeal they just didn’t fit in all the little ways that matter. It felt lacking when they came back to one another. If they had been in their early 20’s, the way they handled their relationship and their families would have made more sense. I’d say, read this with patience but know it could be a pass if you aren’t ok with a big romantic pay-off ending.

They deserve each other?

Any additional comments?

I found this book OK. I got really annoyed with the characters because a lot of the issue was just a misunderstanding! If they had communicated properly t etc etc. I just get frustrated when this happens in stories.
Overall it did keep my interest and I did want to find out what happened.

I really liked hearing the story from Adam's side. The male perspective was intriguing and made me step outside my normal heroine view. It was almost like a thriller waiting to see what would happen next. Enjoyable listen.

Insightful and funny chick flick

I did not enjoy this book at all it seemed like it lasted forever. The end was the best part.

Went on forever

This is one of the few books I couldn’t even finish. The characters are unlikeable and the split narration is confusing. To have the female lead speak both male and female thoughts is one thing, but then when it’s from the male perspective it changes to a male narrator doing a male and female voice. So each main character has two voices and the male to female is painful to listen to. I didn’t even care how it ended and that’s unusual for me. I was hoping to like it, but I couldn’t get there. :(

Be prepared

The characters were highly unlikeable, and their personal hygiene was cringe-making ... why the author graced us with descriptions of dirty clothes, body odor, unwashed hair, and filthy living conditions is a mystery.

There is no plot. The filler to stretch into a novel what basically comes across as a writing assignment is beyond boring.

The male narrator's "female" voice is a caricature; his male delivery is constantly angry. The female narrator is uninspired, and her "male" voices are also angry.

Give it a pass. Not worth a credit. And for shame, Ms Kelk. You've hit a wall and need to regroup.

Zero plot, unlikeable characters, poor narration

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I returned this because I couldn't get past the switching back and forth narration. They should had the Avita do all female roles and Ben do all male. Weird set up.

What was most disappointing about Lindsey Kelk’s story?

the set up of chapters

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Avita Jay and Ben Allen ?

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I listen to a lot of audio books. This story had no surprises though I kept waiting. A very hum drum story line. I wouldn't recommend it though like other books by the author.

Dragged On FOREVER!!!

This is my first review on audible but I felt it necessary to warn anyone thinking of listening to this. The female protagonist is the most annoying, selfish, childish character ever written. She seems confused the ENTIRE book and her inability to communicate left me yelling at my car stereo as I listened. She seems to be throwing a prolonged tantrum the whole book. The male lead is not much better, though after the first couple chapters I began siding with the poor emotionally stunted and communicatively challenged sod. The performance is alright but I find that Kelk writes her female leads as mostly confused, self pitying and self involved for the majority of the book and then evolving into outright selfishness in the finale, all the while expecting the guy they've been stringing along to be there for them while they "figure themselves out". I'm all about being your own person but I've never understood the notion of a.) not being able to do that in a healthy relationship or b.) doing that at the expense of your significant other's feelings. You're perfectly capable of finding yourself without making someone wait for you to do so.

The most annoying main characters ever

The characters were so whiny and failed to actually grow a spine and communicate with each other. I quit by the third chapter because I just couldn’t.

So. Much. Whining.
