About this listen
From the best-selling author of Unrelenting comes the heartbreaking first-in-series, War Girls: Ursula, a harrowing tale of courage and conscience, love, and survival under the Third Reich.
In Berlin, 1943, compassion is a crime.
Newlywed Ursula Hermann is a simple woman, wanting nothing more than an end to the war and the return of her husband from the Russian front.
But some things are not meant to be.
The authorities determine that Ursula's contribution to the war effort is to guard a prison for undesirables and political prisoners.
Then, the unthinkable happens. A prisoner, Royal Air Force pilot Tom Westlake escapes, and Ursula looks the other way. If her single act of mercy is discovered, her life is forfeit.
When the injured airman returns, seeking her help, it is her opportunity to turn over the enemy and save herself from destruction. In a world where right has become wrong, and wrong has become right, Ursula must make a decision: Obey the fatherland, or follow her conscience.
Inspired by true historical events, War Girl Ursula is the unforgettable story of one young woman's moral courage in the face of unspeakable suffering.
If you're a fan of Pam Jenoff, Soraya Lane, or Mark Sullivan, you'll devour this story by USA Today best-selling author Marion Kummerow.

Story
In enemy-occupied Paris, as the locals go to bed starving and defeated by the war, music and laughter spills through the door of a little restaurant, crowded with German soldiers. The owner, Marianne, moves on weary feet between its packed tables, carrying plates of steaming, wholesome food for the enemy officers. Her smile is bright and sparkling, her welcome cordial. Nobody would guess the hatred she hides in her heart. That night, the restaurant closes its doors for the final time.

As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

I really like this author. Read a lot of what she has written
My only dilemma with this book is it should have been labeled “teen and young adult’.it was a sanitized version of real history. It was juvenile to me which is ok cause young teens who are interested in ww2 will find it fulfulling
