The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitated from Greek and Latin classics, though the choice was criticized.

Mr. Murphy did a nice job in the narration by keeping it a light move through each selection his timber fit Walt Whitman's appearance and what is known of him. I felt he represented the work very well.Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
