What A Journey!

I just finished diving into the "Walt Whitman Poetry Collection," and wow, what a journey! I've always been a bit intimidated by classic poetry, but this collection really drew me in. It's not just "Leaves of Grass," which, let's be honest, is a must-read, but you also get his other powerful poems like "O Captain! My Captain!" and "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd." Reading those poems, especially "Lilacs," with its haunting imagery of lilacs and the evening star, you can really feel the raw emotion of the nation's grief after Lincoln's assassination. It's like stepping into a moment in time.

What I really loved, though, was the inclusion of the Emerson-Whitman correspondence. It's fascinating to see their dynamic – Emerson's initial enthusiastic praise and then the more complex relationship that developed. And the complete biography really helped put everything into context. Whitman's celebration of the individual, his raw honesty, and his connection to nature just feel so relevant even today. Influential and emotional

If you love poetry, this is the collection for you. The influences of the times are relevant in the way Whitman expresses his feelings through poetry. The narrator does an excellent job at delivering the prose as I believe Whitman would have intended it to be. An amazing compilation of some of Whitman’s best and most well-known works. Each piece strikes a cord with me. Loved it!

Really poetic

I had never heard of this poet before but I’m glad I picked up this book and listened to it. His work was so insightful and so well put together. I learned a lot from this and I know that you will too!

Timeless

Listening to this was a powerful experience. The poems, especially Leaves of Grass and O Captain! My Captain!, are timeless and deeply moving, capturing themes of nature, humanity, and loss. The addition of a biography was quite nice and added some context. While I loved the content, the narration was hit or miss. At times, it felt overly theatrical and didn’t always match the tone of the poetry, which was a bit distracting. That said, the collection itself is a fantastic introduction to Whitman’s work and a must-listen for anyone interested in classic American poetry.

My favorite is The Leaves Of Grass. This would be excellent to listen to if you love poetry. It would also be fantastic for a high school English literature class.
