The remarkable true story of Dudley "Mush" Morton, the most admired—and feared—submarine commander of World War II

Mush Morton was a warrior without peer. At the helm of the USS Wahoo he completely changed the way the submarines fought in the Pacific War. He would relentlessly attack the Japanese at every opportunity, burning through his supply of torpedoes in record time on every patrol. Over the course of only nine months and five patrols, Morton racked up an astounding list of achievements, including being the first American skipper to wipe out an entire enemy convoy single-handedly.

Here, for the first time, is the life and legend of a heroic submarine commander who fought the war on his own terms, and changed the course of the undersea war in the Pacific.

Great book, full of action and great account of the submarine war carried out against Japan!

How the men worked for one cause!

Good stuff:
- I think the narrator had an appropriate-style voice for this kind of work .
- audio quality was really good, especially compared to some of the recordings of other (and admittedly, much older) WWII sub books.
The skipper, Mush Morton is an exciting and interesting guy to learn about.

Bad stuff:
- nothin’ (at least so far, I do have about 3 chapters left)

To all those who are out there still on patrol: rest in peace.

Great story and narration.

Great book...my 2nd by this author. True account of a WWII submarine commander. Morton is credited with changing the way submarines are employed and this is his story. Well researched and detailed I like the way that he describes naval traditions, like the wardroom so that non naval people may understand.

The storyline

Excellent listen. I basically binged my way through. The content and reading kept the tale going- even through the few slow spots toward the end. This is not a new title. But, it dispenses with the military pomp and hoopla. It gets to the story from page one.

Wahoo, Mush Morton and your crew, You are on Permanent Patrol in the once again troubled waters near Japan. I can only hope your memory and memorials remind us how frail humans are in the face of terrible technologies, able to kill more efficiently and faster. Your Gato boat was such a technology in your day that we might learn from today.

All ahead full !

Great Personal Info About Key Personnel- Not Overly “Techie” About The Gato Boats, Like Wahoo

In the early years of WWII US Submarines were hobbled by both flawed torpedos and overly conservative doctrine. Mush Morton rewrote the doctrine from conservative stalking to the aggressive tactics of hungry Pirates, not seeking treasure but rather preventing Japanese troops and materials transiting to and from the Homeland. His leadership style put far more responsibility on the shoulders of lower ranked crewmen, focusing on the big picture.

All of this in the form of an action packed account into the heart of the Japanese empire.

Highly recommended for its value as an historical account, study of leadership and of human performance in the most violent crucible of War.

Outstanding Story of One Of WWII Great Heroes

A full accounting of Mush Morton, his life and adventures in Wahoo! Very well written and documented. It’s a true page turner you won’t want to put down. You’ll feel excitement, sadness and pride in a great boat, crew and skipper.

Outstanding, Excellent and Amazing!
