About this listen

It's 1942, and as far as her father knows, Evelyn Bishop, heiress to an aeronautics fortune, is working as a translator in London. In truth, Evelyn—daring, beautiful, and as adept with a rifle as she is in five languages—has joined the Office of Strategic Services as a spy. Her goal is personal: to find her brother, who is being held as a POW in a Nazi labor camp. Through one high-risk mission after another, she is paired with the reckless and rebellious Nick Gallagher, growing ever close to him until the war's end brings with it an act of deep betrayal.

Six years later, Evelyn is back home in Los Angeles, working as a private investigator. The war was supposed to change everything, yet Evelyn, contemplating marriage to her childhood sweetheart, feels stifled by convention. Then the suspected cheating husband she's tailing is murdered, and suddenly Evelyn is back in Nick's orbit again.

Teaming up for a final mission, Evelyn and Nick begin to uncover the true nature of her case—and realize that the war has followed them home. For beyond the public horrors waged by nations there are countless secret, desperate acts that still reverberate on both continents, and threaten everything Evelyn holds dear....

A delight

Even at $2.00 I could not manage to like much about this book. The dialogue was trite and tedious. The characters were cardboard cut-outs. I knew how it was going to end before I’d listened for two hours. At one point, I was shouting at two of the main characters to shut the heck up, because they were acting like five-year-olds. Worst of all, it turns out to be a romance rather than a mystery. It even had a love triangle, and when the three of them all met each other for the first time (the lynchpin being the main, female character) the two “suitors” started peeing on each other’s legs like a couple of dogs (metaphorically speaking) in the presence of a female in heat. That was the last straw. If you like predictable romance novels, this one’s for you. But it wasn’t even a very good mystery.

The author thought she was writing smart, flirty interaction between her characters but it's just dreadful dialog. Good thing I paid almost nothing for the audiobook.

Dreadful dialog.

Had so much fun with this. Great story! I can imagine this as a really fun film too.

The first hour of the book was somewhat hard to follow. It wasn't always clear whether the story was in the present or looking back in the past

Disjointed start

Pretty decent story, with a few implausible storylines. But the narrator ruined a good story. Absolutely annoying voice for the main character and not much variation for the others. She sounded like she was doing an impression of Americans by someone who is not from the US. Very nasal.

Homage to 1930’s noir

Likable characters. A bit of a mystery from the past. Well several really but they all get tired up nearly in the end. A nice bow on everything. But a good story in the middle

Better than most

I love the banter back-and-forth between Evelyn and Nick! It was suspenseful funny, kept me on the edge

I enjoyed the book and the performance. Am looking for other books by this author

Great story

The Narrator wasn't horrible. Her chosen voices were, at times, grating and got in the way of enjoying the book. In addition, it took halfway thru the book to become comfortable with the storyline as it sometimes bounced from present day to past events. Even with those flaws, the book was worth the listen.

The Narrator got in the way
