About this listen

Typhoon is the story of an old steamer and a veteran captain. The captain is normally calm and in control but the ship's sudden envelopment by a typhoon brings out both the best characteristics and the worst of the captain and his crew. This story is a penetrating look at the human spirit in the face of disaster - a recurring theme in Conrad's works.Public Domain (P)1981 Jimcin Recordings Classics Fiction Literary Fiction Short Stories

Editorial reviews

What do you do when your ship is barreling through the northwest Pacific and a typhoon materializes? Well, if you're the stubborn and pragmatic captain in Typhoon you go full steam ahead right for the massive storm. Veteran narrator Jim Roberts gives an earnest performance, planting listeners right on the deck of the Nan-Shan, as Captain MacWhirr and his sailors try their best to keep their wits and their ship above water. This audiobook is another great addition to the highly celebrated canon of Joseph Conrad.

Joseph Conrad's characters shine through!

A wonderful sea story that gives us characters that contrast and delight. The narrator was not too good, however; he was not emotionally in tune with the drama and seemed a little monotonous; but his performance gradually improved over the length of the story.

Batten Down the Hatches

He makes you feel wet. Conrad creates an aura of doom in this novel. If you are at all a fan of any other of his work then this is like adding potatoes to the steak dinner.. makes it a bit more rich.. Now because both Conrad and this reviewer are both of Polish nationality I may have an afinity to the works of this author beyond enjoyment. He is a complex author from a complex life in a complex time but what else is life but a convoluted story that entwines us. Romance is not just flowers and kisses. Sometimes it is the way the earth or the sea presses an individual to yield or persevere against adversity. "The old man and the Sea" is a romance and so is "Lord Jim". and "The African Queen"..
