Publisher's summary

The year is 1970. The horror soap opera Dark Shadows is all the rage, the Vietnam War is raging and nine-year-old Katie, an imaginative and independent latch-key kid, comes home from school to discover her mother’s suicide. Taken in by her older sister who has recently become a Jehovah’s Witness, Katie is shown an illustration from a bible picture book featuring wild animals peacefully lounging by a pool of water, surrounded by happy people picking fruit. An enticing offer is made: “Katie, this is Paradise. Do you want to see Mom again, happy and living forever? All you have to do is follow all of Jehovah’s commandments and you can be with Mom again.” Mom happy and living forever? Two tickets to Paradise, please!

So begins Katie’s zealous quest to attain perfection and entrance into a utopian world which promises peace, love, and happiness. She discovers a much darker world. Two Tickets to Paradise, from Cult to Comedy tells the hilarious and heartbreaking story of an earnest, bible-toting kid intent on saving the world, and follows her metamorphosis into a boisterous comedian intent on saving herself through the healing powers of humor.

An amazing story of a world little known to us

I was captivated from the opening chapter, learning about the cult know as the Jehovah Witnesses. I never would have thought that this terrible religion lurked behind those Watch Tower pamphlets. The author brings the story to life in a personal, oft times heartbreaking manor. Her perseverance to escape it all is an inspiration to all that have been emotionally and physically abused. A great read that will leave you reflecting on the story long after the book is done.

Must read- laughter is the best medicine

An incredible story from an incredible writer. I laughed and cried and marveled at the resilience of this woman. I always knew we were stronger together, but never imagined how transformative the power of laughter could be. Thank you Katie!

Inspiring

As a former Witness myself, I truly recognized the attitudes and lifestyle portrayed in this memoir. Katie endured many heartbreaking situations but the story is told with compassion and humor. The narration was perfect, I enjoyed listening to the author herself. Thank you for sharing your story. As someone more recently out of the religion and already in my fifties, I hope to find my true passion as you have.

Heartbreaking and hilarious

Katie Love’s story pulls back the curtain on a particular organized religion, exposing the horrific crime hidden by. And she makes you laugh your ass off, while she does it. To read the words that relate her experiences must have taken great patience and courage.

But to actually HEAR her tell that story, brings you into her fight and struggle. It makes you angry, and makes you question the motives of the people who are behind it all.

It’s a listening experience I’ll never forget.

Savored Every Moment

We loved listening to this book! My wife and I set aside an hour each evening to listen to Katie’s beautifully told story. We savored each poignant moment as we sat there mesmerized by Katie’s life and her storytelling. We did not want it to end. Looking forward to the theater production, film, and television series.

A powerful must-read.

Katie's voice makes it very easy to listen to, and the story is super powerful. She deals with some very difficult situations and ideas, but does it in a way that makes you walk away energized and positive. I'm really happy that I listened to her powerful memoir

incredible story.

Katie's story was incredible. Having also been raised JW , I found her story and commentary on the organization to be very relatable and generally accurate. Thank you for sharing your story Katie, it makes the rest of us know we aren't alone. ❤️

Hilariously timed dark humor.

Listening to Katie Love describe her childhood and mine, (albeit 10 years later),was thought provoking and a little sad. Good thing Love injects a sarcastic wit into every chapter. To be able laugh through the trauma of living in a CULT-de-sack, instead of crying, truly is paradise on earth.
