About this listen
"Twilight Man is biography, romance, and nonfiction mystery, carrying with it the bite of fiction." (Los Angeles Review of Books)
"In Twilight Man, Liz Brown uncovers a noir fairytale, a new glimpse into the opulent Gilded Age empire of the Clark family." (Bill Dedman, co-author of The New York Times best seller Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune)
The unbelievable true story of Harrison Post - the enigmatic lover of one of the richest men in 1920s Hollywood - and the battle for a family fortune.
In the booming 1920s, William Andrews Clark Jr. was one of the richest, most respected men in Los Angeles. The son of the mining tycoon known as "The Copper King of Montana", Clark launched the Los Angeles Philharmonic and helped create the Hollywood Bowl. He was also a man with secrets, including a lover named Harrison Post. A former salesclerk, Post enjoyed a lavish existence among Hollywood elites, but the men's money - and their homosexuality - made them targets, for the district attorney, their employees and, in Post's case, his own family. When Clark died suddenly, Harrison Post inherited a substantial fortune - and a wealth of trouble. From Prohibition-era Hollywood to Nazi prison camps to Mexico City nightclubs, Twilight Man tells the story of an illicit love and the battle over a family estate that would destroy one man's life.
Harrison Post was forgotten for decades, but after a chance encounter with his portrait, Liz Brown, Clark's great-grandniece, set out to learn his story. Twilight Man is more than just a biography. It is an exploration of how families shape their own legacies, and the lengths they will go in order to do so.

Story
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

When Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bill Dedman noticed in 2009 a grand home for sale, unoccupied for nearly 60 years, he stumbled through a surprising portal into American history. Empty Mansions is a rich mystery of wealth and loss, connecting the Gilded Age opulence of the 19th century with a 21st-century battle over a $300 million inheritance. At its heart is a reclusive heiress named Huguette Clark, a woman so secretive that, at the time of her death at age 104, no new photograph of her had been seen in decades.

Story
How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

We all remember Oscar Wilde, but who speaks for Bosie? What about those 'bad gays' whose un-exemplary lives reveal more than we might expect? Too many popular histories seek to establish heroes, pioneers and martyrs but, as Huw Lemmey and Ben Miller argue, the past is filled with queer people whose sexualities and dastardly deeds have been overlooked. Based on the hugely popular podcast series, Bad Gays subverts the notion of gay icons and queer heroes and asks what we can learn about LGBTQ+ history, sexuality and identity through its villains and baddies.

Gay New York brilliantly shatters the myth that before the 1960s gay life existed only in the closet, where gay men were isolated, invisible, and self-hating. Drawing on a rich trove of diaries, legal records, and other unpublished documents, George Chauncey constructs a fascinating portrait of a vibrant, cohesive gay world that is not supposed to have existed. Gay New York forever changed how we think about the history of gay life in New York City, and beyond.

For decades, the specter of homosexuality haunted Washington. The mere suggestion that a person might be gay destroyed reputations, ended careers, and ruined lives. At the height of the Cold War, fear of homosexuality became intertwined with the growing threat of international communism, leading to a purge of gay men and lesbians from the federal government. In the fevered atmosphere of political Washington, the secret “too loathsome to mention” held enormous, terrifying power.

Genghis Khan was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Shaped by abandonment and betrayal, Temujin endured, driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon. Through a series of courageous raids, Temujin's legend grew until he was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of 1,000 warhorses, to subject all nations and empires to his will.

From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Orphaned at a young age, Edith Stuyvesant Dresser claimed lineage from one of New York's best known families. She grew up in Newport and Paris, and her engagement and marriage to George Vanderbilt was one of the most watched events of Gilded Age society. But none of this prepared her to be mistress of Biltmore House. Before their marriage, the wealthy and bookish Vanderbilt had dedicated his life to creating a spectacular European-style estate on 125,000 acres of North Carolina wilderness.

Twilight Man: The Story of Love and Ruin
Liz Brown’s Twilight Man reveals the past of an extraordinary life while uncovering so much of America‘s history with highlights in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
We begin hearing Liz Brown’s voice in the introduction and the Legacy which concludes the novel while Bronson Pinchot gives a clear and passionate reading of a Harrison Posts’ life full of love, riches, passion, heartbreak, war, and death. Brown captures America’s historical past riddled with corruption and scandal during the Gilded Age, Prohibition, WWII (and even mentions the Kardashians).
I highly recommend the audible book! What a wonderful novel.

Amazing listen.
This is a remarkable story, in fact one of the best I’ve encountered on Audible, so much so that I’m purchasing a hard copy forthwith. The narration is superior. The research behind the story is exceptional and it is beautifully written kudos to Liz Brown and Branson Pinchot.

Fantastic and fascinating
This was an Amazon suggestion based on past purchases of the Hughette Clark books, and I wasn’t sure what to expect but I thoroughly and completely enjoyed it. Liz Brown’s incredible research and writing combined with Bronson Pinchot’s outstanding narration made this the best audiobook I listened to in 2023 and in a very long time.

Unexpected Tales Told Well
Butte, MT copper has played many roles in America’s history. This strategic resource helped power the electric grid, but the most shocking stories around it are those of the flesh, not the electric current.
Liz Brown has a great gift for telling stories. Relax and let her keen eyes light the way.
This recent Ucross beneficiary has recharged her spirit, and is about to uncork another work! Looking forward to reading that one-

Butte amateur historian
I am from Butte. I grew up intrigued by history and studying it. Especially the copper kings. Following the Clark lineage was always intriguing, but much of it was hard to trace from Butte. Empty mansions really opened the flood gates to new connections. The moment I saw news of this book I was so excited. Cataract surgeries later I have become a fan of audio books and I get excited for the Easter eggs like the author jumping in. Great research. Great writing. Great emotional replication.

Fascinating story, good narration
the narrator comes off as a little flat at first but finds his way quickly and really does a great job reading this book. Loved the story, loved the writing

Captivating
As a 3rd generation Angelino, I loved all of the geographic references to Los Angeles.
But the story is so much more than that. I was prepared to be bored but nothing of the sort took place. The story is beautifully told, beautifully read, psychologically accurate, well researched.

Fascinating, incredibly well-researched story.
A compelling, surprisingly personal take on a chapter of American and Queer American history that has been too long untold.

Lovely and Well told Story of the skeletons in historical Closets.
This well researched and detailed account of a Twilight Man. Hidden from the history of one of America’s Wealthiest and most influential families. This story deserves to be told in the elegant and artistic beauty that the gentleman earned. How sad the loss of his brilliant collection of art and books. The story is as relevant today as the time it happened. The conservators that took control and drugged the wealthy man should have been charged with kidnapping and torture. I enjoyed this book so much.
