About this listen

Young men who grow without the firm hand of a father can often become wild.

James of Ecclestone is one such youth and when he runs away to become a billman fighting the Yorkist pretender, Lambert Simnel, he begins a journey that will shape him from a youth to a man, a wild child to a Tudor warrior.

Set against the backdrop of the early years of King Henry VII’s reign, this fast-moving novel takes us from the Battle of Bramham Moor to the siege of Boulogne. Beginning with the battle of Bosworth field and ending with the Skirmish of Glastonbury Tor, we see an England changing from Yorkist to Lancastrian and James of Ecclestone becoming a warrior of renown.

Improbable plot but entertaining

I agree with Marina’s review that it is highly unlikely that James could have moved so easily into noble society, and then been happy to return to the life of a simple soldier. Many a strong young men probably proved themselves to be great warriors and leaders, but their advancement would have been limited l. I enjoyed the author’s history lessons.

Terrific story

Excellent novel but the audio was uneven due, in my opinion, to poor audio engineering. However, the narration was very good and the narrator should be credited with a very good performance.

An entertaining new medieval novel.

The story takes place from the vantage point of an English billhook soldier who finds himself in various adventures. The narrator does an excellent job of reading the book.

A great read!

Well paced adventures of James of Ecclestone during the time of Henry VII. The author has excellent knowledge of the time period and landscape of the era. The main character's ability to rub elbows with the top nobility seems a bit improbable but it gives the author a way for us to glance that portion of life.( I much prefer that to the lazy information dumps of many other historical fiction authors.)
I hope this becomes a series!

Terrific, as always

Wars of the Roses post Bosworth Field. Great story, as you would expect, but not from archer perspective as many of his others are.

a good storyteller

I've now listened to all three books in this series.it took awhile to get into and my first books from this author but as I kept going I realized he is a good storyteller with great points of view situations.its the reader that gave me a short temperament with these books.im going to start the next crown series by him and hope for a better reader.
