About this listen

Tressa Middleton made UK history when she became Britain's youngest mum in 2006 aged just 12 years and eight months. Her case provoked shock and outrage - but the truth behind the headlines was far sadder than anyone could ever have imagined.

Born into a life of poverty and neglect, Tressa was forced to grow up fast when was she taken into care at just four years old. She was returned to her mother's chaotic world, but by the age of seven, she was being abused by her own brother and at 11 years old she fell pregnant with his child. For years she kept his dark secret in an attempt to hold her family together until the truth threatened to destroy her completely.

In the years since the birth, Tressa has gone through more pain and turmoil than most adults experience in a lifetime - yet today she survives a brave, strong and compassionate young woman. Now, for the first time, Tressa Middleton tells her own harrowing yet poignant story - a story of hope, forgiveness and, above all, love.

How common is incest?

I felt so sorry for all the children from this family. It seems that they didn’t stand a chance to make good decisions from the example the parents set before them the drug and alcohol abuse seemed like a normal occurrence in their homes. I just wanted to scream tell somebody when the sexual abuse began. Children fall prey to adults manipulative lies because they don’t know any better. A disturbing content

Tragedy of Birth

The tragedy of being born into such gross dysfunction.
While the language was not always appreciated, I presume it was accurately depicted.

The story is worth knowing in the sense that in general it is not unique and there is much suffering in this world.

such a sad story. But what resilience this young girl showed to of survived such circumstances. She has an amazing grace- full heart to be able to forgive & still love after all she endured.

detailed descriptions - not for young ears

This story made my heart break. Tressa blamed herself for all the pain her experience caused her family, and became a drug addict as a result. I was able to feel her pain from her descriptions, and can understand her feelings and why she turned to drugs. Amazing that she is fighting for herself and wants to make her daughter proud of her one day!
I'd like to encourage her to believe in herself and keep working towards bettering her life. it's not her fault she was taken advantage of at such a young age and that her parents were not model citizens. we are all human, and I think anyone who has experienced a life like that would do anything to try to numb the hurtful feelings, hatred, and anger she has experienced in her short life time.
It will be a struggle for the rest of her life, but with a great support group, she can have a great life!
The narrator of this story did a very good job, I felt like I was experiencing everything Tressa experienced as the story was read. I highly recommend this read, especially if you need a wake up call to the blessings that have been bestowed upon you and your life.
