It seems animals are like people in many ways--they just can’t get along with one another. And Brer Rabbit has the most trouble of all. Maybe it’s his mischievous ways, or maybe it’s because adventures always come looking for him. There was the frightening day that Brer Rabbit found himself attached to a baby made of sticky tar. Brer Fox would have had a tasty barbecue that evening if Brer Rabbit hadn’t been such a quick thinker. Then there was the time Mr. Man finally caught Brer Rabbit in the garden.

This collection of Norse sagas retold by author Padraic Colum gives us a sense of that magical time when the world was filled with powers and wonders we can hardly imagine.

Eleven-year-old Nan Sparrow is quite possibly the best climber who ever lived - and a girl. But when Nan gets stuck in a deadly chimney fire, she fears her time has come. Instead, she wakes to find herself in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Huddled in the corner is a mysterious creature - a golem - made from ash and coal. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Story
For centuries the Túatha Dé Danann lived in peace on an island where time flowed more slowly and the seasons were gentle - until that peace was shattered by the arrival of invaders. The Gaels, the Children of Milesios, came looking for easy riches and conquest, following the story of an island to the west where their every desire could be granted. They had not anticipated that it would already be home to others, and against the advice of their druids, they began to exterminate the Túatha Dé Danann.

Story
Most people have heard of the Celts - the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist.

Excellent Companion for Fans of MARVEL
An excellent companion to fans of vikings, history, or the MARVEL universe! I was captivated by storytelling of Norse mythology that I had never heard before. National Geographic puts its own distinctive factual spin on the tales with comparisons to other world mythologies, historical context, or scientific facts. As I have enjoyed this book I have also enjoyed other mythology treasury books in this series. This would be an exceptional starting point for Disney to plan a National Geographic crossover to explore the real world origins that inspired MARVEL's Thor and Loki.
This is a short listen that can be enjoyed in a single sitting. The narration is plain and captures the imagination with the storytelling alone. The only thing that could make this audiobook better is immersive soundscapes and perhaps a heavy metal soundtrack.

It’s About Time
After two attempts to read the physical book checked out of the library, I finally succeeded when I listened to the audio version while reading the physical. I got more out of the stories, going back and forth between formats and conducting further research. Of all the books in the National Geographic mythology series, this is my favorite ones because the stories are odd and relatable. They are also beautifully illustrated by Christina Balit. The stories end with the battle at Ragnarok where the world of gods snd giants were destroyed, giving birth to the world of men and women. I will enjoy retelling these stories.

Too much editorializing for my taste
I came for the cool Norse mythology, not to hear the actions of ancient gods and heroes criticized through a lens of modern sensibilities. Also, it is all very backhanded and passive-aggressive - maybe it was meant to be sarcastic and funny, like OSP on YouTube, but it comes across as bitter and judgemental and I just couldn't put up with it anymore. YMMV of course.

Big disappointment
I know that this is a book for children. However, I expected more culture and less slang. My tween knows, and considers obsolete, yikes and double yikes. On the other hand, I would prefer that my younger children learn that you need to discuss a situation to find a solution instead of 'hashing it out'.

The author was fantastic about explaining background information all the while staying authentic to true storytelling. I knew some about Norse Mythology, but now I feel as if a whole new universe has been opened up to me! I'm so glad I bought this, it was worth the one credit and a million more! 🎉
