About this listen

The new National Geographic Treasury of Egyptian Mythology is a stunning tableau of Egyptian myths, including those of pharaohs, queens, the boisterous Sun God Ra, and legendary creatures like the Sphinx. The lyrical storytelling of award-winning author Donna Jo Napoli dramatizes the timeless tales of ancient Egypt in the year when Angelina Jolie will make Cleopatra a multimedia star.

And just like the popular National Geographic Treasury of Greek Mythology, the stories in this book will be beautifully illustrated to bring ancient characters vividly to life. The stories are embellished with sidebars that provide historical, cultural, and geographic context and a mapping feature that adds to the fun and fascination. Resource notes and ample back matter direct readers to discover more about ancient Egypt. With its attractive design and beautiful narrative, this accessible treasury stands out from all other mythology titles in the marketplace.

Engaging Narrative Overview

This is a great intro for middle grade readers and older to hear about the gods and goddesses of Ancient Egypt. I love Donna Jo Napoli's work and recommend it widely. I knew I'd read this, especially about I read her "Treasury of Greek Mythology" book a part of the same National Geographic series.

This overview of the gods and goddesses and their respective mythologies is also a good refresher. It is watered down to a PG level, so perhaps professional archaeologists won't like this as much. Y'all know how Isis * really * brought Osiris back to life *wink wink*. Regardless, I really liked the informational sections in between each divinity chapter, as well as the author's note describing why she chose certain versions of the tales over others.

not what I expected

expecting similarities to Greek and Norse stories of mythology, unfortunately there really are not any stories just explanations. I don't think author even mentioned the origin of the sphynx as claimed in opening chapters.

Awesome!!

What other book might you compare Treasury of Egyptian Mythology to and why?

I've actually never read any other book about Egyptian myths, believe it or not, I've only watched stuff on tv, so I don't really have anything to compare it to.

Which scene was your favorite?

I really couldn't pick just one, I loved the whole book! But if I absolutely had to pick, it would likely be the story of Osiris, Isis and Set. Horrible and wonderful at the same time!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Made me laugh a time or two, but nothing really extreme.

Any additional comments?

This book was so good! The only thing bad I'd have to say was that it was nowhere near long enough! It was only 3.5 hours, barely enough to whet my appetite. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of books quite like this one on Audible. What a shame. So even though it's only 3.5 hours long, I still give it a 10/10. Wonderful!

Enjoyable audio book

Good voice work for this audio book. seemed a bit complex with the relationships and lineage history in moments (or just me not paying attention), but the voice work and the book did a good job of breaking them down. I would recommend this audio book. I found it enjoyable 👍📙🎧

If only it was longer

Fantastic. The only downside is the fact that its so short, and I wish the two names were easier to remember. Highly recommended.

Skips around a little

I was a little confused by the random jumps in announced page numbers, which makes it sound like it's not the whole book. That being said, the narration was phenomenal.

Very Poetic and Beautiful

Several parks in this telling brought me to tears, especially the myths about Isis and Osiris. I highly recommend giving this a listen. The narration is very well done.
