Happiness: Is It a Matter of Luck...or a Learnable Skill?
Why do some people seem happier than others, regardless of their situation? In the face of fear, sadness, and other emotional suffering, we may believe that there's simply something wrong with us. Yet in his decades of pioneering research, Dr. Rick Hanson has revealed a simple yet profound truth: Happiness can be learned. And like any other skill, it can support us throughout our lives.
Overcoming Our "Negativity Bias"
Because the brain evolved to help us survive dangers and threats, teaches Hanson, negative experiences stick to our minds like Velcro, while positive ones slip away like Teflon. It's the reason why it's so hard to rest fully in our moments of contentment, and why we get pulled so easily into unhappiness.
But there's hope. Ever-growing neuroscience revelations show that we can change our biological negativity bias. We can train ourselves to build a reservoir of uplifting experiences on a neurological level. We can shift the balance of our reality toward happiness.
A Neuroscience-Based Program Refined by Years of Research
In this complete audio program, Rick Hanson guides you through a wealth of core insights, life strategies, and powerful practices that have helped thousands. With him, you'll learn to move out of despair and into resilience, from worry to inner peace, reactivity to grounded self-control, shame to self-compassion, pessimism to an abiding optimism.
Highlights:
- Overcome your brain's negativity bias
- Take back control of your emotions and your life
- Heal old inner wounds to nurture security, connection, and compassion
- Create a reserve of positive experiences to draw upon when you need it
- Amplify your appreciation and enjoyment in each moment
- Get into the "Green Zone", your optimal state of fulfillment, love, and courage
- Over eight hours of actionable insights and instruction for a happier life

Why is it easier to ruminate over hurt feelings than it is to bask in the warmth of being appreciated? Because your brain evolved to learn quickly from bad experiences and slowly from good ones, but you can change this.

Self-Directed Brain Change is based on a key emerging insight from neuroscience: that to keep our ancestors alive, the human brain evolved to stick to negative experiences like Velcro and shrug off the positive ones like Teflon. The good news, teaches Rick Hanson, is that we can retrain our neural structure out of "sheer survival" mode and into one of greater well-being, mental clarity, and moment-to-moment appreciation.

Relationships are usually the most important part of a person’s life. But they’re often stressful and frustrating, or simply awkward, distant, and lonely. We feel the weight of things unsaid, needs unmet, conflicts unresolved. It’s easy to feel stuck.

There's been a major breakthrough in the world's oldest research experiment. For over 2,500 years, Buddhist meditators have investigated the human psyche. Now with the help of modern neuroscience, we have gained an unprecedented understanding of how the brain responds to meditation practice - which gives you powerful tools for changing your own brain for more happiness, love, and wisdom.

In Good Morning, I Love You, Dr. Shauna Shapiro brings alive the brain science behind why we feel the way we do - about ourselves, each other, and the world - and explains why we get stuck in thinking that doesn’t serve us. It turns out that we are hardwired to be self-critical and negative! And this negativity is constantly undermining our experience of life.

Mindfulness based positive psychology
Another review mentions audio problems. I just want to start by saying I had none. It was never exclusive to this book either. It was a temporary thing that affected audible I think as I had it with another book. It was temporary on that book and went away when I played it back a second time. Great "book" It's actually a seminar that the audio was recorded of and includes questions and answers. All the meditations are placed at the end of the book as well as bonus meditations that I'm pretty sure come from another book or two of his. Rick Hanson has another book that came out the same year as this one. I'd choose between this one and that one and NOT both as I think 90% or more probably overlaps. He also has meditation books on site that I'd avoid as I think they contain the bonus meditations found in here and most likely the other new one. Now to the actual book! I would say Rick is mindfulness based positive psychology. A lot of the same things come up in both. I actually like this because it gives you more ways to decrease your negativity bias that don't overlap the tradition positive psychology exercises. Quick recap: Despite other post, there's no audio problems. Choose this book or Neurodharma and not both as I think they're probably very similar. Avoid older Rick Hanson meditation only books as the bonus meditations in here I think are the same ones. Great mindfulness based positive psychology meditation program that doesn't overlap traditional positive psychology.
