A doctor in love with his patient's wife...
A fatal mistake during surgery...
Accident? Malpractice? Or murder?

Defending a surgeon in a malpractice case, Jake Lassiter begins to suspect that his client is innocent of negligence...but guilty of murder. Add a sexy widow, a deadly drug, and a grave robbery to the stew, and you have Miami's trial of the century.

"Move over Scott Turow. To Speak for the Dead is courtroom drama at its very best." - Larry King, USA Today

Legal and medical scenarios interplay effectively and characters are well-developed in an effective "who-done-it." Additional angles of view are seen in glimpses of the wealthy, the middle-class, lower class, and finally, the slime of Miami. Narrator's voice was typically grating, but cast an appropriate edginess to the setting. Definitely not necessary to the story was overdose of gratuitous sexual detail.

Savory plot burdened by excess "spice"

This is my first Jake Lassiter novel and I really enjoyed it.
It offers great insight into courtroom tactics while the mystery develops, at times tinged with offbeat humor.
You can be sure I will read the whole series. Highly recommended.

Lassiter is the man!!

I enjoyed this book, I originally got this book for my neighbor to read, but I decided to take a listen. I would recommend this book, I looking forward to the nex in this series.

The narrator was good.

Begins a little confusing but not long until the action pulls you in. Creepy characters and twists and turns make it hard to figure out who the bad guy or guys are. A manipulator and a
a god complex. Whose who. Enjoy.

Good Start to Series

This author writes characters with depth and a plot that never gives away the truths until the end. Well performed, the different voices artfully done and easy to distinguish. This story was written with humor splashed into every chapter. I’ll get more of his books.

Excellent story

The Jake Lassiter Series starts out with what I think is the best of the series. Plot twists keep you guessing, as there are several possible' perps' Lassiter is witty but not as smart-ass as in later episodes. Wonderful introductions to Charlie and Granny - these seem like the kind of people you'd like to sit next to at a fancy dinner. Guaranteed no boredom. ....And CREEPY ending!

I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I thought this was a very interesting book in that the plot changes about 1/2 way through the book. It starts out as a medical malpractice and then changes. You have Jake the retired athlete with a sports injury turned lawyer, a daughter accusing her father's second wife of conspiring with his doctor/her sometimes lover to murder him, in the meantime there is a back up plan the good doctor is unaware of. Oh what a tangled web... If I say anything else you won't have to read the book.

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

He just did a really good job. He gets all the right inflections for the different characters.

Any additional comments?

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book, it's a very good courtroom thriller without too much time in the courtroom!

Jake Lassiter is not your typical hero...

It left me hanging! I really enjoyed the book, the building of the characters was wonderful. of course, the narrator was key to this and he did a wonderful job!!

What an ending!

I have downloaded over 20 books this year bases on other Audible users opinions and ratings. All higher rated than this... but this was the best so far. A serious mystery/thriller with a good dash or humor and intrigue. Painfully slow to start with but soon picks up. Obviously many average and pathetic books are saved by Luke Daniels narration but this one pretty much held its own. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Unexpectedly delightful and funny... worth it!

I wasn't sure when I started this book that I was going to stay with it. But once I got used to the narration, I found the main characters dry humor and pace to be quite entertaining. The story is well composed, and the court scene play out well, if not a little familiar, but his wit gives some freshness to the story.

What a fun little mystery
