About this listen

Thirteen outstanding authors. Thirteen aviation stories that never happened.

Throughout the human experience, historians have wondered, “What if?” What if Americans had fought on the side of Germany in World War I? What if Germany had invested in naval aviation in World War II? What if Russia had started World War III?

Wonder no more, for these questions, along with many others, are answered within this audiobook. Told by a variety of award-winning authors, like Sarah Hoyt, the 2018 Dragon Award Winner for Alternate History, Richard Fox, the 2017 Dragon Award Winner for Best Military Science Fiction, and Kacey Ezell, the winner of the 2018 Baen Reader’s Choice Award, To Slip the Surly Bonds deals with aviation warfare that never happened in our world…but easily could have.

The second book in the exciting new Phases of Mars anthology series, there is something for everyone inside! From fighting alongside the Red Baron, to flying a P-38 Lightning, to present day air warfare, “To Slip the Surly Bonds” traces a century of aviation warfare…that wasn’t. From learning how the PBY got to the new world in Taylor Anderson’s The Destroyermen series…to fighting the French in a very different Vietnam, this book has it, so come aboard and find out “what if” all of these things had changed history…just a little. You’ll be glad you did!

Was it history

It could’ve been history or was it. I started this book thinking maybe it was not for me, but once I got into the meat of the book I couldn’t put it down.the narration was excellent, the author did a outstanding job of pulling this book together.Yes I would recommend this book.

Red Baron on Trial

This book is an excellent selection of wartime aviation stories. Fans of “The Destroyermen” by Taylor Anderson should buy it for another harrowing story in that universe. The story “Zero Dark 30” surprised me by being a genuinely suspenseful thrill!
The narrator has improved with this, the second in the series.

A MUST READ for the fans of any of these authors!

13 fantastic stories by 14 amazing authors. While it might be "Fiction" there's plenty of facts as well.
The first 4 stories have sparked an interest in doing a bit more learning about "The Great War".

A couple of the authors confront some "unpleasant" aspects of Race and History that absolutely needed to be addressed , and did so in an outstanding manner!

If you like MilSciFi, alternate history or aviation history.... then this book is a MUST READ!

My only *minor* gripe is that in one of the stories (I'll not mention which one~you figure it out, or not) the narrator clearly doesn't have any sort of military background as evidenced by the reading of several military Rank and directional abbreviations as if they were words. For example what was heard was "El-Sea-Dee-Arr" which is written as LCDR, the military abbreviation for "Lieutenant Commander" which is what I SHOULD have heard. It didn't take away from the story but it WAS annoying and beyond the author's control.

I'm looking forward to the next installation of "The Phases of Mars"!
