About this listen

With her evocative prose and finely tuned insights into family relationships, Mary Alice Monroe has earned legions of fans and numerous awards. Reminiscent of Anne Rivers Siddons, her writing is a delightful blend of southern authenticity and rich emotional drama, and she delivers an engaging and complex novel with Time Is a River.

Mia Landon travels to a mountain sanctuary near Asheville, North Carolina, while she begins her recovery from breast cancer. There, in the cabin at Watkins Glenn, Mia discovers the long lost journal of a well-known fly-fisherwoman from the 1920s, Kate Watkins.

Reading Kate's inspiring words recounting her sensational adventures on the river coaxes an otherwise withdrawn Mia from her shell and gives her the desire to reconnect with the world around her. And as she learns to fish, she also uncovers surprising secrets that span generations - and a hidden scandal that has the power to change not only her own life, but also those who live at Watkins Glenn.

Enthralling, heartwarming, and moving, Time Is a River is a novel that wonderfully captures the complexity of human connections - to the natural world, to each other, to one's self, and ultimately to one's soul.

Touching and inspirational

For years I have listened to MAM and have loved all! This one stands out for me. Her self narration and descriptions of all the beauty that surrounded her characters and her wonderful story were rich in giving me the feeling that I was there. 💗😍

Not usually a fan of the romance genre, but...

This is more a novel of survival (breast cancer, self-doubt, infidelity) and the journey towards self-reliance, than what I think of as a romance story. The novel begins with a Casting for Recovery NC breast cancer survivors' retreat near Asheville. (See www.ForRecovery.org for more info about this nonprofit organization.) The main character's awakening to new possibilities is inspirational.

The author's narration was perfect. I'm from NC, and often distracted by a narrator's syrupy fake accent when performing a book set in the South. Although originally from Chicago, Monroe has lived in the SC low-country and immersed herself in its culture long enough that she's developed an accent that's neither faked or forced.

Was definitely Audible credit-worthy!

Sound issue on audio

The audio voice was lovely, however, coming through speakers (car, home system) it wasn't totally clear. It was as if some settings weren't correct when recording. Too deep.
The book helped me fully understand my husband's love of fly fishing! Now I intend to try it!

one of my favorite books!

I have listened to this book many times over the years. I can get so immersed in the story that I feel like I am in the book. I prefer Christian books, but this exception to the rule is fabulous!

Easy listening

I love fly fishing, so I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately, the story was a bit too predictable. A straight-forward romance story. Not bad, just not my favorite genre.

Not so good

I guess this an example of why there are non authors who narrate books, because authors, especially Mary Alice Monroe, shouldn't. Her voice is pretty flat and the only nuances in her reading were to read other character's voices really loud. And, because her voice is so soft, I had to listen to it at a high volume to hear it, then it would seem super loud. I listened to this book while visiting North Carolina, so that made it more interesting and I enjoyed the women and fly fishing parts. But, overall I can't really recommend this book.
