Acerca de esta escucha

Essence and Blackboard best-selling author Beverly Jenkins writes passionate, historically-grounded stories of betrayal and redemption.

Beginning in 1864, Through the Storm chronicles the tumultuous lives of onetime lovers Raimond Le Veq and Sable Fontaine. The Le Veq family was a proud, prominent black New Orleans family until their fortune was plundered in the chaos of the Civil War. It's the charge of former Union Major Raimond Le Veq to restore the lost wealth of his family.

Raimond once loved a woman--the lusty, beautiful, and complex former slave, Sable Fontaine--but she coldly betrayed him during the war. When Raimond's mother inexplicably chooses Sable as his bride-to-be, Raimond doesn't know if he will ever be able to trust the treacherous Sable again.

About Beverly Jenkins, The Detroit Free Press says she is "[H]eading for superstar status." Kim Staunton's sensuous narration will thoroughly satisfy all connoisseurs of fine romance.

I truly love reading the works of Ms. Beverly Jenkins. The historical interludes and the entertaining stories bring me a lot of joy. I would have never guessed I would be hooked on reading chickit, romance novels but as I live and breathe I’m reading one after the other. Thank you Ms. Jenkins !

Excellent civil war-reconstruction era romance

Beverly Jenkins continues to be one of my favorite historical fiction writers. She seamlessly interstates historical detail into her story without resorting to a lot of info dumping.

I knew things were bad during reconstruction but I had no idea how bad they really were. Jenkins uses the romance between escaped slave, Sable, and Major Raimond LeVeq, a freeman from an old an distinguished New Orleans family to bring out the difficulties faced as the country sought to rebuild itself, and the terrible backwards policies instituted by Andrew Johnson, the president after Lincoln. Black schools were burned, militia kept blacks out of major cities, blacks were kidnapped and forced to sign lifelong work contracts with plantation owners, pre KKK vigilantes terrorized the countryside.

Jenkins’ characters persevere and fight for what’s right. Sable and the Major start a flirtation in a refugee camp towards the end of the war. Because she ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time, he thinks she’s betrayed him as a Rebel spy. Sable ends up the paid companion of a cute little old lady in Boston who wants to go back to New Orleans to spend her final years where it’s warm. The little old lady happens to be best friends with the Major’s mother, who thinks Sable is the perfect wife for her oldest son. They end up in a marriage of convenience that quickly becomes a love match, a process helped out by information from an old friend that proves Sable wasn’t a traitor (something that was really obvious, given her character, but the Major needed a little help getting over himself). One of the nice things about this story is, even tho it’s dealing with a husband who thinks, erroneously, his wife has done him wrong, he never uses sex as punishment. It’s always caring.

Sable uses her new power and influence as a member of one of the most important families in New Orleans to help the poor and homeless, especially the street kids. She’s not a cheesy do-gooder, she’s a strong woman of integrity doing what she can to help. A nasty man from her past shows up and causes trouble, but the Major and his brothers save the day.
