Publisher's summary

Number-one Wall Street Journal best-seller.

Instant New York Times best-seller.

A game-changing approach to marketing, sales, and advertising.

Seth Godin has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, and fans from all walks of life, via his blog, online courses, lectures, and best-selling books. He is the inventor of countless ideas and phrases that have made their way into mainstream business language, from Permission Marketing to Purple Cow to Tribes to The Dip.

Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one compact, accessible, and timeless package. This Is Marketing shows you how to do work you're proud of, whether you're a tech start-up founder, a small-business owner, or part of a large corporation.

Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. Their tactics rely on empathy, connection, and emotional labor instead of attention-stealing ads and spammy email funnels.

No matter what your product or service, this audiobook will teach you how to reframe how it's presented to the world, in order to meaningfully connect with the people who want it. Seth employs his signature blend of insight, observation, and memorable examples to teach you:

  • How to build trust and permission with your target market.
  • The art of positioning - deciding not only who it's for, but who it's not for.
  • Why the best way to achieve your marketing goals is to help others become who they want to be.
  • Why the old approaches to advertising and branding no longer work.
  • The surprising role of tension in any decision to buy (or not).
  • How marketing is at its core about the stories we tell ourselves about our social status.

You can do work that matters for people who care. This audiobook shows you the way.

Critic reviews

"This Is Marketing is a very accessible way into Godin's thinking.... Godin writes in pacy, jargon-free prose and this book is interesting and useful for anyone who wants an insight into how, and why, we buy things or change our habits in any way." (The Financial Times)

I admire Seth's work but...

This book was full of lots of little marketing quotes and truisms, by Marketing Guru Seth Godin himself.

Many key concepts were glossed over with just a few words, left to the listener to interpret.

There were lots of interesting sound bites that felt important, but they were not clear enough to be useful.

Overall it lacked purpose, goals, structure and action steps.

I'm sure someone will find some great nuggets of wisdom here, but it taught me to consider teaching more clearly than this.

My questions to Seth are:

Who is this book for?

What is the main point?

What change are you trying to make in their lives?

What is the roadmap to get them there?

What are the key action steps to get them there?

Read... This.. BOOK! (ok, well listen)

I'm a scientist who studies media and runs a business. I am not a marketer but I know for my work to have impact I need to know about this stuff - Godin's book is remarkable. Easy and relatable. Absolutely filled with nuggets of gold wisdom.

Great info--Godin's intonation is maddening

Loved the content. HATED Godin's voice. It was like...he was...speaking with tons of ellipses and semicolons. I sped it up to 2.0x just to make it through. Glad I got the info, but I wish I'd read it on my Kindle v. Audible.

Good book

Fair listen. As an author I got to myself that I simply need to keep writing and writing good to attract attention of an agent.

So much value!!

Seth does a great job of giving people the knowledge and information he uses in his own marketing strategies. If you’re serious about marketing for the long term and not just trying to sell for the short term , you need to listen to this book!

Great Perspective on Good, Ethical Marketing

As a marketing professional, it's often easy to become disgusted by the shady side of our industry. Godin's This is Marketing provides a great primer on what marketing is really for: improving the lives of your customers by giving them something they want.

Godin is the prince of pith, and almost every line comes off as a witty one-liner, which is at once very compelling and a little exhausting when you are reading a fairly long book. Overall, though, the clarity of Godin's thinking is something to behold, and something to emulate.

Marketing for the ethical business person.

I just finished my bachelor's degree and had only briefly considered marketing since my passion is helping others; this book has made it likely that I will now enter the marketing world to do just that with my Master's degree. Thank you Seth Godin!

Changed my thinking on marketing

I’m not a marketer by trade and have never liked marketing because I felt like it was fake. I love being real and genuine with people, but I am trying to make some changes (products and services) to help people and haven’t known how to do that without marketing. However this book totally changed my thinking on marketing. I love basically everything Seth talked about here especially how marketing is all about empathy and service. And I really appreciate one of the final sections on marketing to yourself. Thank you for changing me Seth!
