Story
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

Story
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Story
Celeste Price is an eighth-grade English teacher in suburban Tampa. But Celeste's devotion lies elsewhere. She has a singular sexual obsession: 14-year-old boys. In slaking her sexual thirst, Celeste Price is remorseless and deviously free of hesitation, a monstress driven by pure motivation. She deceives everyone, and cares nothing for anyone or anything but her own pleasure. With crackling, rampantly unadulterated prose, Tampa is a grand, uncompromising, seriocomic examination of want and a scorching literary debut.

Nicholas, a would-be poet, and Nakota, his feral lover, discover a strange hole in the storage room floor down the hall - "Black. Pure black and the sense of pulsation, especially when you look at it too closely, the sense of something not living but alive." It begins with curiosity, a joke - the Funhole down the hall. But then the experiments begin. "Wouldn't it be wild to go down there?" says Nakota. Nicholas says "We're not." But they're not in control, not from the first moment, as those experiments lead to obsession, violence, and a very final transformation.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Ten-year-old Jas lives with her strictly religious parents and her siblings on a dairy farm where waste and frivolity are akin to sin. Despite the dreary routine of their days, Jas has a unique way of experiencing her world: her face soft like cheese under her mother’s hands; the texture of green warts, like capers, on migrating toads in the village; the sound of “blush words” that aren’t in the Bible. One icy morning, the disciplined rhythm of her family’s life is ruptured by a tragic accident, and Jas is convinced she is to blame.

What Have You Done Today to Deserve Your Eyes?
Rating: 8.5/10
This is going to be a pretty short and succinct review being that this is a 102 page novella, mostly revolving around text chat and emails – an epistolary novella in better terms.
What have you done today to deserve your eyes?
I’d seen tons of people in the horror community either purchasing copies of this book or talking about how much they loved it, so I figured I would give it a shot. LaRocca, outside of being a mutual on socials, is relatively unknown author to me (hence my hesitancy to believe the hype) but friends whom I trust with book recommendations RARELY leave me disappointed.
What starts out as a seemingly normal email thread for the purchase of an antique apple peeler becomes a shared obsession that borders on possession. It is a tale of loneliness and the feeling of being wanted and loved, to the point where you are willing to risk everything for it. Throughout the back and forth between the two characters, LaRocca gives the reader glimpses behind the screen as to who these women are – though again, we ASSUME based on the synopsis that these are women, but it is the internet (and if it is on the internet, it must be true right?).
Sometimes, you never know if you are in the right audience for a read and this was one of those times. Sadomasochism ain’t really my thing, neither is body horror (thanks a ton, The Troop by Nick Cutter), but there was something about this one that I literally could not set it down. In saying that, if you do chance upon this little story, it is a 1-sitting type read. No way you can set it aside and come back to it. It is one where the pace and intensity continues to ramp up until the very end.
Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke is a dark, heavy-hitting novella that is a borderline masterwork in epistolary horror.

it sticks with you
I'm not sure how to explain it, but this story really had a profound effect on me after reading it. It's been a day since I've read it and yet I still can't stop thinking about so many aspects of it.
[WARNING FOR SPOILERS]
Some of the lines in particular are what capture me the most. The constant mention of "what have you done to deserve your eyes?" and then the final line being ""I close my eyes and for a moment I wonder if I deserve them today" absolutely made me gasp when you realize what Agnes has done.
As disturbing as the events are in the book, I wasn't too put off by them, yet I felt sad for what happened to Agnes. She was lonely and easily taken advantage of and as the story progressed the anxiety I felt as Zoey pushed her further and further was oddly discomforting, yet made sense during the situation. The red flags were all there!
It is the strangest, most profound, yet "fine" story that I have ever read. I would rate it a 3.5 if I could, but I'd rather rate it a 4 instead of a 3 in that case.

Not for the squeamish. But it wasn’t THAT bad.
The end was SO abrupt. I guess that makes sense because this story is written as a series of emails and messages, but for a moment I actually thought my phone just glitched out. But no, that was the actual end of the story.
This book also gets hyped up a lot within the horror community, so I guess my expectations were really high. I just didn’t find it THAT disturbing. It’s pretty bad, but definitely not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Overall I still really enjoyed listening. Good for fans of the horror genre, definitely not for those who get grossed out easily. TW for abuse, body horror, emetophobia, insects, and animal cruelty.

Story too quickly paced to build any tension
I read this based off of reviews on TikTok, who said it was deeply unsettling and horrific. The author told the story very quickly, with the relationship moving unnaturally fast. The two women spoke nearly the same, so they didn't read like two individual characters, just a stream of consciousness. There was little character development. It's not what I anticipated and I'm very let down.

Wow
I’m sort of speechless after having just finished listening to this book. It’s a fantastic premise that’s executed really well. Amazing performance by Laurie Winkel. Super fucked up and tantalizing = great queer horror. Only thing about it that was annoying was the email headers that are read in full with each correspondence—I would have chosen to just shorten it to the names or screennames. That works aesthetically for print but not so much for audio. 9/10 recommend.

It’s kind of hard to determine the quality of the narrator when the content is beyond strange
The narrator read the story in a neutral tone that didn’t take away from the story but made it feel even more bleak- in a good way.
The novel itself reads like a short story and can be finished really quickly. While I enjoyed it and thought it was fast paced, it does have one of the most bizarre twists I would’ve never seen coming. One of my only complaints (that isn’t a spoiler) is that some of the emails and messages sounded like they were written by an author, rather than people advertising a listing or chatting with other users.
I also wouldn’t recommend this to those who are very sensitive to animal abuse in stories.

poorly written book about lesbians written by a man
book entirely relies on shock factor with a light speed pacing that rushes towards a vague finale. the only two characters have so little development i had to rely on the narrator's voice change to tell them apart.

When horror ruins you
I raced to replace my credits (cost me $40, more on that later) because this book had such good reviews about how horrific and disgusting it was. I’m a horror fan so I thought I’d give it a spin. Yes it was disturbing, but not to the level I was expecting after reading reviews.
A LOT of the story is emailing and texting bCk and forth and it gets grating to listen to. The narrator did their best and after turning it to 1.5x speed I had an easier time listening.
It’s a decent story, but honestly not worth the over $10 I ended up paying for it- not even close. It reads a lot like a creepy pasta you could listen to on YouTube for free.
Not terrible but not great by any means. I feel like the story had a ton of potential but was just cut short and not developed enough.
