Everything my husband and I have always dreamt of has finally come true. Our new home with its open-plan kitchen and marble countertops couldn’t be further from the small, damp flat where we lived only months ago. I’d hoped this would be our fresh start, an escape from my past, but the handwritten note that arrived on our doorstep makes my blood run cold – you don’t deserve this life.

Story
My husband is lying. The minute he came home with alcohol on his breath and unable to look me in the eyes I knew it. We used to be in love–the intense ‘I can’t be without you for a second’ kind. Where it hurts deep to be apart. But now, we’re the couple that keep secrets from each other. We hide the truth. He thought I wouldn’t find out. I’m a detective–it’s literally my job to uncover clues and solve mysteries. I know what he did. And now I’m sitting here, in a police interview, being asked the question ‘did you kill her?’ to which I utter one life-shattering word: ‘yes.’

Last night, we celebrated our anniversary. Over candlelight, we talked about the children, our work, and I was so happy, and felt so loved. But the next morning, when I check my phone, there is a message. From a friend. And a string of photos appear of my husband, Will, with another woman: walking along the street holding hands. Going into fancy hotels. Standing at a window, his arms around her, her head on his shoulder…

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. Story
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Story
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

My New Favorite Ruth Mancini Book!
This gripping, intricately plotted thriller is dark, sharp, and whip-smart.
Characterizations are strong, multi-layered, and ultra-compelling.
The book's "Obsession. Intrigue. Revenge" theme showcased multiple unreliable narrators and gasp-worthy twists.
TWs: Pedophilia, Cancer.
This is my third Ruth Mancini book and this extraordinarily talented author continues to wow me.
Per Ruth Mancini's bio, she has spent over 25 years in and out of courts and police stations, representing those accused of crimes, and her robust knowledge of the legal system and the criminal mind shines.
Although narrator Annabel Scholey did a superb job with the narration, I would have preferred a full-cast audiobook narration.
5 enthusiastic glowing stars.

Best book I’ve ever read! The twists will knock your socks off & the story will bring you to tears. Usually the more thrilling a book is, the more unrealistic the story ends up being. This book sacrifice nothing. I read the paperback in one sitting.

Good characters and story
Often in suspense/mystery stories, the characters can be unlikeable. Especially because the author is trying to give us red herrings and believable suspects. But that is not the case here, this story is like peeling an onion. The main characters are well developed and have good story arcs. The more I learned, the more I related and appreciated the characters. I really enjoy Ruth Mancini's writing. Also, this narrator is fantastic.
